Oracle to connect with Mac OS X By Daniel Drew Turner eWEEK June 29, 2001 10:54 AM PT In a boost for Mac OS X as a corporate platform, Oracle Corp. has announced that it is developing client software to connect workstations running Apple Computer Inc.'s new OS to Oracle's own database applications. According to Bob Shimp, senior director of Oracle 9i database marketing, however, the software won't immediately match the features available for other operating systems. "The Mac client will provide programmatic connectivity to Oracle databases but will not provide any client tools (executables) such as SQL*Plus," he said. "As such, it is not a full client like that on [Microsoft] Windows." Shimp said that an "unsupported, early adopter version" based on the company's 8.1.6.1 client code base will be available late in the third quarter of 2001. He added that Oracle is planning on releasing a production version, based on 8.1.7.1 code, before the end of the year.
