Currently icons for topics and products on desktop are uploaded by the user. On mobile they are in sprites. These should be compiled into sprites for both mobile and desktop automatically when they are uploaded.

Rather than the @1x icons that are currently being uploaded, @2x icons will need to be uploaded, that will be downsized for the desktop/non-retina sprite. 

The models for Products and Topics will also need to be tweaked to store the sprite offset of the icons.

Finally, we will need to figure out some form of cache-busting.
