Description

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:22.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/22.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130620122336

Steps to reproduce:

- Install Adblock-Edge as Addon (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/adblock-edge/)
- Add some filter subscription
- Exit Firefox
- Remove the FILTERLISTURL from the url=FILTERLISTURL line*
- Start Firefox

* idea was, to make sure the list does not update itself. But if this works is not the scope of the bug

Actual results:

Firefox freezes short after being started, i think when adblock edge tries to update the list.

Expected results:

Maybe some errormessage, because adblock edge tried something which cannot work (i think loading "" as url), maybe giving the addon some errorcode (could not load url).

But no Firefox freeze.

I solved the problem for me now, since i found what triggered it, but i think such a bug in a addon (loading some invalid url) should not to freeze firefox.

Jorge, Adblock Edge is an outdated and broken fork of Adblock Plus - I cannot provide support for it.

You misunderstood the issue. This is NOT a support case for the extension.
This is a bug-report, that extensions have a way to freeze firefox, which be fixed, so only the extension hangs, not the browser.

But Adblock Edge is not Adblock Plus, and is apparently made by somebody else than Wladimir Palant. Does the problem exist in the current official Adblock Plus?

Oh, sorry for that, I misread the add-on name.

This can't be done with the current Mozilla browser architecture. Add-ons are capable of many things, including hanging the browser. You should bring this issue up with the developer.

I would assume it, but this IS NOT the point. No addon at all should be able to hang firefox.

This may be a hard task to realize it for every function a addon can call, but i would guess the fix for a invalid network-connection is not too hard to do. Here some url-checking (depends on the way the addon does the request) before loading the url would be enough to fix the issue, so that no addon at all will hang firefox with this function anymore.

If you stay with wontfix, okay. I just thought, maybe someone would like to add some security against this type of misfunction in addons.
