(Whiteboard: [Maker Party] [outreach] [copywriting])

* @ Erika D: Let's prep an outreach to go out to the big list for week of July 8. Focused on Maker Party.
* Main ingredients:
** round up of best events that have happened so far
** links to some of the updated documentation we're shipping
** Surman's blog on Webmaker: https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2013/06/30/webmakernext/

* Erica S: what's the process for co-ordinating this w. Geoff's team?
So the process Geoff and I agreed on is: let's write our draft email, and leave time to give it to Geoffrey and Mark a few days before we want it to go out to review, OK, and be ok with the timing.

I'll give Geoffrey a heads up we want to send an email that week.

Erika and Matt: Do we want this to be a whole list, or only Maker Party signups? (I'd vote whole list, or at least a large list).
* Next steps:

1) write draft email. Erika D: will probably need this by Thursday, to leave enough time for review.
2) give it to Geoffrey and Mark for review

+1 to whole list
Q: Am I doing setup/production? Pls let me know when to look for inbound raw copy.

Request: pls add simultaneous review opportunity for watershed to advise re: format

I will document email formatting as I gain it.
I will aim to have an outline by tomorrow (Wednesday, July 3) so Sackin can review it before she leaves, and a solid first draft for others to review by Thursday.
* From Geoff M:

* we have two e-mails scheduled: a fundraising survey and Maker Party donations appeal to send out.
* We can combine this with the donations appeal.
Hey folks, just chiming in: we should also check to see how many new webmaker users have opted in to receive emails and add them to BSD list. For our MVP we made the decision with Ben S. that this would need to be a manual process - ie when folks are ready for a mailout, the product team pings the database. Once you have a firm date, let us know and we can do that.

Jbuck, this'll be another database dump. Hooray!

Do we know how many e-mails are on that list?

We also have several thousand to bring across from StopWatching.Us.
We should decide soon exactly who this email is going to.

If we are including stopwatching.us people, I feel like we need to provide quite a bit of background and context since they likely have no idea what Webmaker is all about, let alone the Maker Party. My understanding is that this email would provide a Party update, not an introduction.

For this reason, I recommend against including the stopwatching.us people in this particular email. Instead, I think we should introduce them to the world of webmaker with a special email for them alone to avoid confusion and opt-outs.

The new Webmaker users that Brett mentions above are arguably already familiar enough with Webmaker, having been to the new site, signed up for a username and hopefully created a Make, that we can include them in this email without needing to provide too much context.
We get list growth from multiple channels, many of which have nothing to do with Webmaker. This isn't a MoFo or Webmaker list. It's a Mozilla list that we happen to control.

I realize I wasn't at the orientation around this. That's largely because there was some confusion and I thought it was BSD training, rather than anything beyond that.

After Erica and I connect, I would like to schedule another session to detail how/why this list exists and its purpose.
Agreed, Geoffrey. That would be super helpful. In the meantime, it would be great for me to know who this email will be sent to so that I can draft it accordingly. Thanks!
It will go to the full list, including the StopWatching.Us people if we can get them over in time.

Critical thing re: the draft text is to have it match the tone, structure of the previous e-mails to this list. So from a specific person in their voice, etc.

I can also loop in Watershed to help, if you'd like. Alternately you can find me on IRC.
Geoffrey, Erika that sounds good. Let's do full list, and Geoffrey we'll get you a draft to review as soon as it's done.
We've been submitting user emails directly to BSD (via https://sendto.mozilla.org/page/s/webmaker ) from day one if they check the "Mail me" checkbox, see bug 880833.

Just adding this for consideration - we can easily create a variant version of this email for the new stopwatching.us onboards.

Possibly it could be as simple as creating an alternate introductory paragraph or...I'll leave that to you all to decide.

I remember from last year there was a multi-email onboarding of the SOPA list to the main Mozilla list which went quite successfully, so maybe there's a way to use variants to fast-track this new list without too much confusion.
Right - pardon my shipping fog. Jon is correct - We made the decision to leave delivery settings with BSD (ie opt-out), but we add them to BSD on signup if they opt in. So - no need to sync with Product folks on this for new users!

One thing I'd add is that we should sync up around what we want on front page from editorial perspective when this goes out.
* adding Kat, as per Brett's request to keep her in the list on this
* as per comment from Geoff today: once Watershed has reviewed and finalized copy in etherpad, Watershed will do the HTML build. Good process point to be aware of.
They also do the QA and testing.
Thanks Matt. Adding in from call today - if you guys can give me a day's lead time before shipping this, i'll make sure Webmaker frontpg is beautiful in time for it also :)
Here's the draft,reviewed by Sackin. Geoffrey, can you kindly review? Feel free to re-write the PS donation ask (not sure if it's accurate to say the Maker Party is free)

* Geoff took a pass. Awaiting his final edits.
* As per discussion in today's Maker Party call: please update this ticket as we go!
* People are unclear as to a) status and b) most recent draft.
I'm working on the draft; apologies on the delay. Will be ready this aft.

Michelle and Matt dropped in while I was writing it and have both signed off.
Sackin: final sign-off? Can you also loop in Mark when you're ready.
Hey guys - working hard to get Makes ready for switching over in time for this, but there have been a few minor technical delays. Can I get an ETA for this so that I know how much to rush? :)
Still finalizing copy, Kat. I don't imagine this will go out until early next week as it still needs to be prepped and tested. I'll update as I know more.
Ahh that's a big relief Webmaker front-page wise. Will continue build, but in less of a rushed fashion! Thanks Erika :)
Awesome. And I've gotten it all up on Webmaker.org so we're ready to go from that front too!
* Status?
It's being built.
Hi All,

Got the first tests. The plain text e-mail, pasted below, looks really bad/weird with that number of links.

Can we make a blog post that has all the links so that the plain text version can just link out to the post?

Hi Geoffrey,

Mozilla's Maker Party has started with a bang! We're only a few weeks into our 3-month celebration and thousands of people have already gotten together at events around the world -- from India to Uganda to France -- to help make the Web together.

Are you in? It's easy. Join an event, make something and share it with your friends.

https://webmaker.org/events
https://webmaker.org/tools
https://sendto.mozilla.org/Maker-Party-Makes

The Maker Party is one of my favorite times of the year. In the past month, we've seen the Mozilla community rally to help computer science students in India start hacking the Web, teens in rural France use Thimble to remix movie posters and a dedicated community of Web mentors begin to emerge in Uganda.

There's no end to Maker Party participants' creativity. People are making websites with Thimble, remixing videos with Popcorn Maker, creating fun animated gifs and even blending technology, traditional art techniques and...vegetables! In New York City, youth are producing fantastic projects like CityScenes, an app to help cyclists plan a scenic bike journey around NYC through landmarks like movie scene locations and monuments.

Sound like your idea of fun?! Join an event happening near you or, if you're more ambitious, invite 5 of your friends over and host an event of your own. We've got guides to show you how and lots of projects -- remixes, mash-ups, websites -- you can all build together.

Whatever you build, make sure to share your work. Tag it with #makerparty and celebrate with other webmakers from around the globe.

The Maker Party runs until September 15 so there's lots of time to join in. I can't wait to see what you build!

Yours,

Michelle

P.S. -- We work to ensure the Maker Party and our tools are free for everyone. Please donate today to help us empower a global community of people learning to code, remix and make the Web together.

Yes. I will do that now.
I've shared the HTML version with Erika for review.

Great! Please use the links from the e-mail, rather than direct links, so that we can track click throughs.

We're clear from webmaker.org side! Send away!

Friday status report:
-email is staged
-photo permissions are good
-just need to test the final version before we send and we're ready
-this will go out Monday as Friday afternoon = bad time to send.
