Thunderbird 17.0.7, openSUSE 12.3. This bug is similar to 20422, 506933, 558303 but not the same: Do the following: 1. Refresh messages 2. Click on a news group list, e.g., www.nlzero.com:hamradio.the_shack 3. Select a thread, e.g., RTTY: a. Messages newer than four days ago are missing. 4. Navigate View > Sort by > Group by Sort: a. The missing messages appear. 5. Navigate View > Sort by > UnThreaded: a. The messages disappear. 6. Navigate View > Sort by > Threaded: a. The messages remain invisible. 7. Go to 4 above: a. the sequence remains the same. This repeatable: happens repeatedly. I have gone through all the menu options, I have closed, reopened, rebooted. Nothing makes the missing messages reappear except a direct search or the steps in 4. above. The messages *were* visible until last night. I must have clicked *something, but I don't know what. They are not archived, tagged, ignored. I'll be glad to experiment further, but don't know where to go to do that. Let me know. I don't think it happens with regular mail accounts, at least I haven't seen it yet. Just the NNTP threads. Obviously all messages should remain visible, regardless of sort order. Attached the newsgroup_file.msf; the newsgroup_file.dat reads Version="9" Logging="no"

I don't understand how you get to 3a "missing messages". If you still see this issue please update the bug
