Hello,

As a community member who would be doing Mozilla work from the Portland Office I would love to be involved in the process.

Portland has its own flag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Portland,_Oregon) which might be something that could be included in the sticker.

Is this still in motion?
Slowly, but yes. :)

Coming in Q4 for sure. In the meantime, we are very open to any suggestions from Portlanders as to local imagery you think might be suitable for the sticker.
Portlandia (not the TV show) is iconic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portlandia_%28statue%29 as are some of the unique bridges (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:St._Johns_Bridge_04.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawthorne_Bridge).

In fact, perhaps it makes sense to collect some ideas from portland@ in an etherpad?
Put a bird on it.
Obviously there must be a bird on it.

+1 for the etherpad. https://etherpad.mozilla.org/mozpdxsticker
Awesome, thanks for the suggestions - those will be super helpful.

To set expectations, we certainly won't be able to incorporate all ideas, nor can we guarantee that it will meet everyone's vision of what the perfect Portland sticker will be, but we do promise to do our best to represent the City of Roses.
Is it really too much to ask to have 36 different themes represented on a 2" sticker? Oh well. I suppose we'll make do.
We'll probably have to do with 30 different themes, max.

Hello PDXers, I hope this post finds you well!
Thanks a ton for all of the suggestions in the etherpad and being patient while I created some directions for you to see. Portland has a lot going on and like John said, it's going to be difficult to meet everyone's expectation of what Portland means to them. Please have a look at these directions and LMK what you think. I took a few different approaches with some visual themes I see a lot of these days, but wound up feeling pretty good about the bicycle themed sticker. I think printing it on clear vinyl would be fun, so that you can see behind the spokes. It's my understanding that Portlanders like the term, "PDX" but let me know if you have a strong aversion or preference for it vs. "Portland" or "Portland, OR" etc.

Finally, please understand that these are directions - I will probably spend a bit more time on the execution once I know which direction everyone is most excited about. I hope you like where this is headed

Awesome! Personally, I'm excited about the state silhouette and bridge ideas. The bicycle wheel is cool as well, albeit a bit less traditional.
"PDX" technically refers to the airport, but it's often used interchangeably with "Portland".
Thanks Lee! I think all of these are pretty awesome (but agreed that the bike wheel is particularly cool).

Note to all - like I mentioned earlier, it's probably impossible to come up with a sticker that perfectly represents everyone's vision of Portland, and I would like to avoid a design-by-committee situation or one where we're taking votes to see which ones wins.

My preferred process here would be to get feedback from as many Portlanders as possible, and then Lee and I will take all that into account and go with the one we feel best meets the needs of this project. That said, please do circulate this around the Portland group in whatever way is best...I know not everyone is on this bug and don't want people to be excluded.

We'd like to finalize this early next week, so let us know what you think soon and we'll go from there. Thanks!
+1 for the Bicycle Wheel design and the State Silohouette Design (PDX).
Thanks, Lee! These look awesome.

My favorites are the bike wheel, the state silhouettes, and the bridge badge. And, yeah, PDX and Portland are both fine. I have a slight preference for the former, but I like the full 'Portland, OR' in the bridge badge.
+1 to Bridge badge and Portland Silhouette
favs in order are the bridge badge, bike wheel and green state symbol
My favorites in order are the green state silhouette and the bridge.
Hi all, I really appreciate all the input and feedback regarding the Portland sticker. In the end, John and I felt that it would be appropriate to break the mold of the 'suitcase badges' with the bike wheel direction - another way we can help "keep Portland weird." Please take a look at the attachment - the illustration has evolved a bit since I last posted.

I'm looking forward to seeing these on clear vinyl so you can see behind the spokes.
Sticker Robot http://stickerobot.com/order/ will print 1,000 4" circles on clear vinyl for $413

I set up the file to their specs:

While a couple of people say the bike design is tops, asking around the office it seems that the bike wheel is not really popular.

The bridges resonate with everyone, while cycling can be a somewhat polarizing issue.

Lee and John, please consider not forcing a choice on the office that it doesn't like, just so you can break the mold of your general design arc.

Portland would like it's own weird, not California's ;)
I'm sad to hear that the suitcase/travel motif is being phased out. I have really liked these and been looking forward to a version for Portland. Our skyline is recognizable and would have made for a good sticker. Is there any way we can reconsider this?

I'm not particularly fond of any of the sticker designs, except for perhaps the state outline since at least is is uniquely representative of Portland. The rest of the designs really are not. Also, the bridge is very reminiscent of the Open Source Bridge logo (which I like, naturally, but could cause confusion).

Regarding the bicycle tire: the text is over powered by the image, and the image doesn't say much. Not all of us are cyclists, and I'd rather see something more applicable to everyone.

Imagery that signifies Portland and Oregon: Mountains (specifically Mt. Hood), our skyline, trees, the White Stag / Portland sign (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Stag_sign), roses, state outline.

Could we try some of these?

Also, could we consider working with the local Portland community on this? We have a fantastic network of creatives here and partnering with someone local could help us create a really unique, genuine design.

> Not all of us are cyclists

Blasphemy!
Hi all. I'm sorry this one isn't to everyone's liking, but we followed the process outlined above and landed on what we landed on. This is one of those situations where it's truly impossible to please everyone, and I don't want to get into a design by committee situation.

Each of these Mozilla Space stickers is intended as a fun giveaway to both local employees/community members as well as visitors to the office. Our approach for this and the other stickers has been to focus on a particular element that represents the area and works as an interesting visual. I feel like we've done that, but if you'd like to work with the community to create alternate versions, you are certainly encouraged to do that. This is the design we're submitting to WPR, though.

That's really disappointing to hear. Today was the first I'd heard about the sticker or had a chance to look at any of the designs. I wonder how many other Portland/Oregon-based Mozillians have seen the designs and had a chance to offer their feedback? I understand the potential issues with 'design by committee' but I feel strongly in this case that there hasn't been sufficient feedback solicited from the community. I see a handful of folks participating in this thread, and nearly as many voicing support for other designs as for the bicycle.

Please consider holding off submitting a final design to WPR until we've had a more thorough review and feedback process.
I think it's unfortunate that you've chosen the design that no-one from Portland has a clear preference for, and some people dislike, when there are two others that people have expressed clear preferences for.

Also, for what it's worth, most cyclists are going to wince every time they see that the valve stem is not cotangent to the rim.
I also have a problem with the way this has proceeded. After the first batch of designs, we (i.e. those who are most affected by this decision) were only given a few days to provide feedback (two of which consisted of a weekend) before a final design was chosen. This is not just about a sticker - this is about how we as an organization operate. Rather than rushing this through, I would appreciate it if our opinions were actually taken into account rather than casually brushed aside.
John, what's the rush here? Why can't we allow more time for feedback and try to find a design more of the Portland folks will be happy and proud to hand out?
I don't see why this needs to be rushed in fact limiting feedback and not allowing there to be some consensus around what the final design will be seems opposite of the Mozilla way.

As someone who hands out a lot of stickers, I would also like the discussion about the design reopened. Portland is a special place and I'd love for our sticker to represent that.

I hope that we can find a way to spend a bit more time on this and come up with something that we love.
Hi all. I can tell there are a lot of very strong opinions on this topic. I really think the best way for you to collectively get what you want is to work with an artist from the local Portland community to create something that feels appropriate for your office.

I'd like to keep the bike wheel one on the table as an option, but I don't see any harm in having two (or more) stickers if you're able to generate other designs that are more exciting for you.

These office stickers are really just a side project for my team, and we're not able to commit to additional cycles on this right now. With that in mind, and given the preference for a locally sourced option anyway, I'm closing this bug to reflect the move toward a made-in-Portland solution.
