add console logging to the error handler function

Details
right now we write back a 500 error, but we don't actually log the underlying error (where in the code, what kind of error, etc). If we go back to new Error() objects, with a console.log to pipe the information to stdout, we should have a much better idea what's going on when 500s occur.
