User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130329030856
Steps to reproduce:
In TX 17.0.5 in linux mint, I do have a working local network connection but WAN is bad, so the server can't be reached.
Actual results:
I get a message saying the server could not be reached (which is OK). But dismissing the message with OK (or close, I can't remember), the message is closed saved to my Sent folder.
Expected results:
The error message is OK, but the message should have been saved to Outbox to try sending it again later. Now I have to Edit as new and send again :D

All my accounts are imap. It seems "server could not be reached" causes the message to be saved to Sent mail.?

I can say nothing about your problem, but I can say that phenomenon you saw can be obsered if bug 780124 occurs,

Severity: normal → S3
A workaround may be adding your address to the CC list of carbon-copy addresses. When your email is sent, expect a new message in your inbox as a response to sending a message. The workaround sends a message through your email provider, confirming a message is sent.
A similar function is possible with Return Receipt in Thunderbird. A Delivery Status Notification is also available as an option, I expect, to your benefit.
