Details

`adb shell stop b2g` on the Leo device does not stop the b2g process. This blocks ui-tests automation because we need to be able to stop b2g, fiddle with the device and then start it again between tests. We have flashed the Mozilla b2g18 build over the top of standard Leo build: Gecko http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-b2g18/rev/629020cf576b Gaia fb9362d34260771d4a00b9a0e10a6bbad397bd3b BuildID 20130716070204 Version 18.0 'ps' on Leo device root 152 1 236040 81412 ffffffff 00000000 R /system/b2g/b2g 'ps' on Unagi device root 110 1 181340 71732 ffffffff 40037330 S /system/b2g/b2g
NB - I included the 'ps' output because I noticed on Leo it was 'R' as opposed to 'S' on Unagi.
From IRC: 16:17 m1: stephend: try |adb root| first?
Thanks, |adb reboot| works but I feel it's a workaround. I'd like to know why it is different because we don't need it for Unagi/Inari/etc devices. I'll keep this bug open for any more feedback I can get.
Got this from m1 last night: 16:22 mwu: dietrich: if you're not on a leo device, it'll probably be root by default 16:22 m1: dietrich: -eng builds run |adb shell| as root, -userdebug/-user builds don't 16:22 m1: you get the "shell" user, that can't do much 16:22 m1: (like it can't kill a process running as root)
OK this is an engineering build but it is flashed differently so there must be some subtle difference in the way it is configured.
To be specific, engineering boot partitions provide root. It's safe to always run adb root on all devices.
Have learnt enough today to close this off. Thanks!
