89464 - Emptying Trash changes mail sort priorities/'unreads' mail/causes blank contents in mail window

When I empty the trash directory:

1) my sort order spectification (order received/decending) gets
   reset to <Date received/accending>
2) Some old emails that I imported (by quiting mozilla and
replacing the Inbox with the Eudora file and deleting the summaries)
and now sit at the bottom of my Inbox get set to 'unread' when
they were 'read' before

3) The email list window becomes empty and can only be refilled
by clicking on some other email directory and then clicking
back

All the above has been repeated (and does not occur unless the
trash folder contains at least one email)


ps last time I tried to compact the Inbox even more hell broke
out and I daren't even try again (no bug reported)
