Details

The "Release Notes" instructions do not contain an accurate description of how to install a new version of Mozilla over an existing version without duplicating files/directories/etc. Removing old versions first will remove added themes, which makes existing profiles unusable.

related: bug 169777 Somewhere in the Known Problems section should add If Mozilla does not start up properly, or has a large gray area with red error message at window bottom, after upgrade, delete the xul.mfl (or XUL.mfasl, XUL FastLoad File) file in your profile directory.
