We have around 4 different types of search, where exactly do you start your search?
Needs more detailed steps:
1. do this
2. do that
Any relevant error messages in Tools > Error console (clear the error console, then search, then check console again).
Is it possible that the search results were stale and the mail got deleted or otherwise moved in the meantime? We have some bugs where search results do not update themselves.
OK, it just happened again:
(Note: it appears to be random)
Did this:
Searched for an email from April by entering a keyword I know the mail contains.
Search results show the email.
clicking on on the subject to open the email an empty window opens.

rcdorner, it's still not entirely clear which search you were using.
Was it global search ("Search... <Ctrl+K>") or "Filter these messages... <Ctrl+Shift+K>"?
Can you still reproduce this bug or it occured only once?
I recently got tricked after unwittingly having clicked on the paperclip column header ("Sort by attachments") which re-sorted messages with attachents to the top while effecting inconsistent order by date, and I really thought messages were missing until I discovered the wrong sorting...

rcdorner, please quote (!) and answer *all* questions from my comment 1, we ask them for a reason.
Another question here: Affected messages on POP or IMAP account? (Check in account settings if not sure).

Steps:
1. enter in search (ctrl+k) a word you remember from an email you can't seem to find.
2. in the serch results you click on the email you recognize and you see date, thread levels, subject and partial text.
3. sometimes when clicking on email thread [email] is not found
4. go to that folder where email should be look in date range
5. is not there! where is it?

much is change since I'm running on eight cores with 16 GB RAM running the latest release of Windows 10
I will post again should one day I come across it.
