This has never happened in windows, but happens each time in linux (same settings/profile as win). Once autosave is unchecked, there is no autosend.

alta88, does this still reproduce for you in linux? (very odd)
At the time that you reported this, did problem reproduce in both 17 and daily?

i don't recall, it was on a real profile and autosave had to be turned off immediately, and hasn't been turned back on now that it's updated to 24. i do believe there was an mzine report a while ago. test profiles on current daily haven't shown the issue but there isn't much composing going on there.

I've seen rare reports of this in the past year - and must admit I thought they were crazy

In the 2010-2013 time frame this behavior is reported by multiple people in multiple venues, including in 2014 when alta88 filed this bug:
- http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/how_can_i_stop_thunderbird_autosending_unfinished_emails Matt commented here. And there are comments as as recently as 2014.
There were also reports in the era of Thunderbird 2
- http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=596322 (speculated about the early days of gmail imap)
I think there is also at least one closed but report in the version 2 time frame.
There must be some underlying problem with autosaved drafts. And not limited to linux

correction, http://web.archive.org/web/20140415083501/https://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/why_is_thunderbird_sending_out_unfinished_drafts
Speculation: touchpads (on linux, still) are notoriously bad in moving the cursor to unexpected places, as disable while typing is hit or miss. It could be that ctrl-enter is invoked erroneously, and the warning dialog is in Do not show again mode. It could also have been that an autosave would change focus (although this does not happen on 38), and combined with the preceding caused an unwanted send.

zdv80 is also a gmail user, who changed the drafts folder setting from imap account to local draft to avoid the problem.
Other people in that mozillazine thread said there were no copies of affected mail in the Sent folder

real profile still has autosave turned off (and it's on 52 until Tb supports webext ad blockers). i will see if this happens on a test profile and comment if it does.

I've done this many times.
Closing for now. Please reopen if you find steps to reproduce.
