This is an actual setting, and it works. AFAIK this is disabled for production devices currently, but we were planning on turning it on at some point.

hey Patryk, I think all that's needed here is a settings icon for home screen.  Airplane mode was brought up cause it's currently being used as a placeholder.

Someone add a "homescreen" icon at Gaia source tree. You can see a screenshot at Bug 1021343.
