Setting priority was never part of the requirments
Is the priority only a property like others, meant to be displayed to the recipient, or does it has an effect in the carrier's network ?

I am uncertain of the requirments for priority.

so needinfo to sync-1@bugzilla.tld to provide more detailed requirements on how priority is intended work.

adding noemi and stephany on CC so they have visibility of this bug and my request for more requirement detail/definition before design work can start.

This looks like a new feature request, bumping to koi?

I will ask it from validation partner, and give you some feedback as soon as possible.

Attached SPEC, please search "X-Mms-Priority"

add to backlog bug 891754
blocking-b2g: koi? → ---
In the SPEC, it's clearly shown that it is OPTIONAL.

I've seen no evidence that it's used by the network in any way. My guess is that it's merely an indication set by the sender to be seen by the recipient.

BTW, I don't see this feature on my Android 4.3 phone. So I think it is very seldom used and we should not do it, because this would clutter the UI.
Ayman, what do you think ?

Wilfred, we'll need you to decide here too.

Thanks

We just had the discussion. We added this to backlog so we can investigate the need for this item.

I have personally never used it nor did even know it existed but I am checking with our partners as to their need for this feature.

Leaving NI on me for now until I can confirm with operators on this requirement.

Yes, Optional in SPEC.

FYI: in android there is priority setting in message setting menu.
3 options: High, Normal, Low. Normal = default.
Thanks.

Hi Cheng-an

could you provide us we the version of the android OS you are looking at and either a clear statement of the path to setting the message priority or (much more preferably) a video of you setting them... i have 3 android devices here at the moment and i cannot see how to set message priority on any of them... and i have never received an SMS or MMS with a message priority associated to it.

Thanks

ni? to Cheng-An

Thanks loads for the reply and attachments
...Interesting. This is not an option that appears on any of the Andriod devices I have access to. I have access to:

  3.2.1
  4.0.4
  4.2.1

and I don't see such an option to set message priority on any other benchmark OS... so from a UX perspective end user value is low, and we could probably get better ROI on the expense of our efforts elsewhere.

Clearing Ni for me, over to Product for a decision on this feature ...Wilfred?
Flags: needinfo?(aymanmaat)
from an operator and product perspective this feature also has very low user value.

I would not implement this feature and focus on features we need to move up to MMS v1.3 and other important items within MMS
If we ever do this, I think this should rather be a hidden pref in an advanced panel in Settings, used for all messages, than a visible pref in the Messages app.

Ayman, what do you think ?

Hmm, no, from my current understanding of how this function should work cannot agree with that. I interpret this as giving the user the ability to set the priority flag for each individual message on a per message basis. So the setting for it would need to be within the message app easily accessible from the compose screen ...and maybe even in the message thread view, to facilitate priority of message upon reply to thread.

A setting deep in Settings app that when switched would apply to all messages would not work. (unless i am misinterpreting your suggestion)
Flags: needinfo?(aymanmaat)
It was my suggestion. Yep it's not really good but cluttering the thread view is not very good too imho.

Maybe we'll be able to do it for users of devices with bigger screens.

Everyone agrees this has too low user value.
