User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_8_2) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/28.0.1500.95 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

holding phone in right hand, press power button (top of phone) with index finger.
Stretch thumb to bottom of the screen (or reposition phone in hand) to pull up camera/unlock section.
Tap unlock button.

Actual results:

as above

Expected results:

Should be able to unlock phone in fluid motion.
Pressing volume button should wake up phone.
(accessible with fingers when held in right hand, or thumb when held in left hand)

Then a swipe with thumb in centre of the screen should unlock phone
(easily reached with thumb when held in either hand)

After several versions passed, maybe you can check it again and we can clear some old bugs. Thanks.

I think this is still awkward, although using a Flame - you can hit the "home" which is nearer the swipe.
If you weren't aware of this and used the power button it's still bad.

Also, there is 3 seconds lag between when the screen lights up and starts responding to touch.
There is no visual indication that the screen will not be responsive, so you tend to just try it several times,
which creates a microfrustration. This means that the user needs to learn that they have to wait for the lock screen.

If the lock screen was either touch enabled immediately (better) or visually showed it was currently unresponsive,
(not as good) that would be an improvement.

I think the unresponding time is a technical issue, but on my device it would not take 3 secs to response (the longest one taks 1 sec, although this is still a bug).

I may take a look. And for other issues like it may be too hard to unlock with only one hand, we may NI UX to see how to solve it.
NI UX to see if this can be solved with new spec, or we've already had such spec but maybe missed in the previous versions.

This is something we would need to solve in future releases. The current unlock took many, many months to achieve as there are numerous patent restrictions around it that must be addressed in any design, and extensively reviewed with legal. So, if we change it, that's what we're facing.

Now, taking 3 seconds to respond is something new that we have not seen before, and seems like a performance bug or something.

Okay this was on a Flame with a build from

https://github.com/mozilla-b2g/B2G/commit/b5a208385d0b85531e8f

I am consistently getting 3 seconds.
Then that's definitely a performance bug.
I'll take a video to show that I hardly encountered the 3 secs lag. As I said, I usually could unlock it within 1 sec. But there may be some unknown issue.

And, the topic of this bug is about it's hardly to unlock with only one hand, right? That's why I flag the NI of UX.

The device is with yesterday's Gecko + Gaia.

It shows that I can press the power button and unlock soon. Could you confirm that's the similar case with yours, or you encountered other tough issues?

okay here is photographic evidence:

Oh, and I realized that you can only power up with the home button when the
phone is charging on usb, so usually you have to use the power button
(at the other end of the phone from the unlock swipe) so everything I said
earlier about awkwardness still applies.

Are you flashed with the newest build? Because I've seen a bug which should already be fixed, and obviously your lockscreen is old version.

Here is the resolved bug:

Bug 1018836

The new UI style should be done in the bug:

Bug 950884

And the UI should looks like (you can also find it's already applied from my video):

https://bug950884.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=8427036

I'm pretty sure the new version of Gaia should not looks like what you shown. So maybe you can flash Gecko + Gaia again to confirm that.

Okay well assuming that the 3 second thing is fixed in the latest build,
the UI picture you linked still has the unlocker at the bottom.

That is very awkward to use one-handed on a phone where the power button is at the top.
if the power button was on the side, or if you could wakeup the phone with
the volume button, that would not be as bad. Indeed, there are some firefox phones that
do have the power button in a better position, but since some are more awkward the software should allow for that.

In comparison, my oldish android phone is quite usable one handed, from unlocking - to zooming on maps.

Yes, that's the original issue we should contact UX, as I said. Although first time I did that the 3 secs problem occur so we didn't discuss the issue. If you want to, maybe you can NI them again.
