Description

The Recruiting Team would like to have two shirts made and we need assistance with the design of the shirt. One shirt is just for our team to wear so we want it to be a little humorous to represent the team. The other shirt is more of an external shirt for others in the company to wear to spread the word that Mozilla is an awesome place to work and to encourage people to start a conversation with us if they are interested. The team discussed different things they'd like to see on a shirt and we came up with a concept for each.

First shirt (team only):
* (Front) A gaggle of magical/mythical creatures (purple squirrel, unicorn, double rainbow, waldo, etc) (Back) Mozilla Recruiting, Making the Magic Happen.

Second shirt (company-wide)
*(Front) I work for Mankind. (Back) Who do you work for? OR putting both sentences on the front with Ask me about Mozilla or something similar text on the back.

Hey there -
It's been over a week and I haven't received a response and the team is curious what sort of timeline we are looking at.

Could someone please provide an update on what and when next steps will be?

Thanks,
Kimber

Hi Kimber,

Sorry for the silence. T-shirt designs are kind of taking a back seat right now, as we are finishing up a couple of major projects.

I'll have next steps for you by the end of the week.

Hi All, we'd really like to get going on this, especially since the goal was to be finished before the end of September.

Matt - can you let me know what you think of the two concepts?

Mat - adding you to the bug so you can weigh-in if needed.

Hi Kimber, I like the two concepts. I've actually gotten started on the internal one today. I think this one will be quite comical, however, will take quite a bit of time to pull off. For the external one I am thinking this one can be typography focused, so hopefully will be a quick turnaround.

Hey MT - Dropping my comments in here because I wanted to see what the status was on this. Our goal is to have one of these ready for the team to wear at Summit. The team will be at all three locations so getting these created in time to ship or be hand carried over by someone is key. Can you give me an update on how close on schedule we are to accomplishing this.

Comment 8

Hi all. Wanted to weigh in with a few quick thoughts:

- Mat's comment above is the first time I've heard that this is needed for the Summit. I do think the earlier goal of having the design ready by the end of September is doable, but that doesn't allow for printing. Matt Ternoway may be able to comment further, but my sense is that the Summit goal will be very hard to pull off.
- do you guys have a vendor in mind? Are we using Staples?
- I like the intent of the externally-facing shirt, but I think that "I work for Mankind" sounds a little pompous. I like the full "Don't work for the Man, work for Mankind" line a lot, but when you break it down this way it doesn't sound right. Couldn't we just use the full "Don't work for...etc" text instead?

The original goal was to have them completed by the end of September, that includes design, promoting and delivery by the end of September which would be in time for Summit. What can I do to help make this happen?

Sorry about the misunderstanding, but when we see a due date of 9/30 on a design bug our default assumption is that that's the design due date.

Mat C, are you looking to have both shirts for the Summit? Matt T, how far along are you in the design process?

No worries, I understand. What I am concerned about now is want we can do to make it happen. We don't need both shirts for summit if that is impossible. Which one is more do-able?

Hi guys, I am on the t-shirt design all day today, with the goal of having something to show early next week. The external tee will involve much less time as the various requested items for the internal will be quite involved. I can put my focus on the external one first which I don't see a problem having finalized by early next week with time fo have printed for the Summit. I noticed there is still some uncertainty with which line of copy to go with for the external tee. Can we have that finalized today?

Sorry about the miscommunication on the completion date for this project - that was my fault.

MT - thanks for helping us get the design for the external one completed quickly!

For the copy on the front of the shirt: "Don't work for the Man, work for Mankind" is good IMO.
For the copy on the back of the shirt" "Ask me about Mozilla"

Slater and Mat - is this good with you?
Do we want to consider adding the new careers page URL to the shirt back?

My main thought here is that we usually like to keep things pretty simple on the back. Personally, I would vote for the "Ask me" or the URL, but not both.

Comment 16

Between:

*Ask me about Mozilla
*Careers URL

Which conveys a stronger sense of: We are hiring! Ask me about working for Mozilla or visit our careers site to see current openings.

I'm inclined to go with the first, because it starts a conversation and reinforces that we are an open organization, with open and friendly people. Rather than the 2nd, which is informative, but which any curious person (and we do tend to hire curious people) could go online and find.

Comment 17

That makes sense to me. +1 for "Ask me".

With regards to a look and feel for the external T-shirt, do we want to leverage some of the look of the new Careers website? perhaps with the hexagons and the colours used? Or is there more room for flexibility with this?

I would keep the external t-shirt pretty simple and direct...wouldn't worry too much about integrating a lot of the stuff from the Careers site here.

How would people feel about making use of a stylized rocket on the front and a small satellite or globe on the back with a speech bubble reading 'Ask me about Mozilla'. I thought it would be an interesting way to connect the front and back of the tee. I know the rocket has been used in other creative pieces, but it seems fitting with the headline.

Hi guys, I've gone with a different approach from the space inspired look. Attached is an example of the direction I am thinking...It is an simple and iconic look which places a heart crossed with a wrench and screw driver, to give the impression of working for mankind while playing up an industrial look with a bit of rock n roll inspiration. I've subtly placed the hexagon shapes used on the 'Careers' site as well as the 'Summit' creative to appear as screws, giving a connection to the tools. Let me know what you think of this

Thanks!
Matt

Comment 24

Thanks Matt!

Would love to hear from the Careers team on this. My concern is that this design places more emphasis on the wrench/heart graphic than the text itself. It's a cool visual, but not sure if that's what's needed or not.
(Reporter)

Comment 25

I like it - I'm not too concerned about the graphic being so dominant since the back of the shirt still gets the objective out very clearly.

However, with that said, totally open to potentially re-working this. I really love the building elements in the graphic - is there a way we could incorporate them into the text itself so there's no need for the graphic element in the middle?

I know Mat is at a recruiting event today. ME - how feasible is it to come up with an additional design for us to look at before the end of today so we can have Mat look at both? If it's not doable, my vote is to go with the design we have since it is pretty cool.

Hey guys. I actually like it. I agree that the logo is a bit bold, but I agree with Kimber in that the overall messaging with the back is good. I think incorporating some of the Careers and Summit design elements is good as well. Plus it has a unique design that will get people "looking closer".

Question on other color options for the design element - because the shirt is closer to black rather than the charcoal grey as shown in ME's design, I'm wondering if it might end up looking a little bumblebee-ish? Could you suggest some other options for the text/design?

Hi guys, following up with the internal shirt design - I'm not sure I've had as much fun working on such a unique request as I did with this one - having said that, it's a tough group of elements to interpret and bring together cohesively, so I hope I have translated your vision effectively.

The suggestions were to include some 'magical/mythical' characters, so I have gone with the first few suggestions and created a stylized Waldo riding a unicorn...with a purple squirrel, along with a few 'magic stars' both front and back to tie the two sides together. The overall look is a bit 'flat' as I think it will print and read better with a reduced colour palette. Let me know what you think about this.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt - this is seriously awesome!! I can't wait for these to be made. :)

I'm working on some shirt options with the vendor so we can figure out what color the background is going to be. It will probably still be something neutral, but since we've just done charcoal, I'm seeing if there's another good option like a slightly lighter gray or maybe solid black.

My initial thoughts:
1) Is it possible to change the color of the unicorn's mane and horn to a lighter color so they will stand out on a dark shirt?

2) We might need the font on the back "Making the magic happen" to stand out more as well.

3) Could we get a four leaf clover in there somewhere? :)

Thanks!

Thanks guys!

I've updated with a few of your requests. 1. I've bumped up the copy 'Making the Magic Happen' a few more sizes. 2. changed the colour of the horse hair and horn to purple - thought this gave it a bit more of a mythical feel, but also kept the palette limited. 3. I've added a small 4 leaf clover on Waldos shirt - it's pretty subtle since I felt that if we bring it too much green it may start to look too busy.

Also, once we have picked a final t-shirt colour, I may need to tweak the character colours a bit...currently I have changed changed the example tshirt to a lighter grey.

Hey Kimber, I had a look at the two choices, I think both will work nicely since they are both darker and will allow for a nice contrast of colours from the graphics. My personal choice would be to go with the navy, since its not too navy looking...still has a bit of a neutral look to it (from the picture at least)...could look pretty sharp.

I can post the print ready Illustrator files when you are ready.

Perfect, let us go with the navy then! Is it possible to get another layout of the front and back? Given the hoodie style, I'm wondering if we should have the design slightly lower (just an inch or two).

Also, we need to figure out where the text on the back will go since the hood will drop down. Attaching pictures of the actual hoodie on a person.

Ready for those print ready Illustrator files anytime.

Thanks for passing along. I've placed a few examples of where I think the graphics would look best. For the back I'm a bit worried about how the hood effects the placement. It may be a bit odd to have it the low on the back...usually placement looks best between the shoulder blades. You will see I have a second example, which places the wordmark on the lower left corner. Obviously this isn't as prominent as the other, but since this is an internal t-shirt, I thought we could get away with it. Another thing I am worried about, but is hard to determine, is how the purple will contract with the shirt colour...in the example it appears pretty washed out...I'm thinking I may have to find a darker shade of purple. Let me know what you think.

Comment 53

I like the look of the back in the middle when the hoodie is down, but if it is up, I agree, it would look odd. I also agree with your sentiments about the purple being washed out. What about a really light purple? I dont know which would stand out more on the grey. Also, is there an option to get a lighter grey colored shirt?

Comment 54

and when I say lighter grey shirt, I mean lighter grey hoodie.
(Reporter)

Comment 55

Slater, can you weigh in on the placement of the back text? I'm fine with either - between the shoulder blades is definitely more prominent but agreed, it's slightly odd.

If we go with the lower left, I'd only ask that perhaps we move the sparkly stars to sit to the right of the text so they will show up a bit more in the center of the shirt and attract more notice to the text.

Since I think the shirt we're getting is going to be even darker in color than the grey pictured in the photos I attached, I'm wondering if a lighter text would be more visible. Is it possible to go with a lighter and brighter shade of purple?

Comment 56

My personal preference is for higher up on the back...if you want people to see the text, I don't think they'll notice if it's down in the corner.

Also, I would advise against overthinking here. These shirts are going to be great!

Seems like we'd rather go with the more prominent placement. I've positioned where I think we can get away with seeing it fully if the hood is down, otherwise any higher up and it will be obstructed. I've also repositioned the stars to the right, so that they will be more visible. And finally I have gone with a lighter pantone for the purple, but I am still a bit unsure of the contrast since it is hard to tell from this image. Should we provide two purple options, a light and a dark and decide when the proof is printed?

I asked my contact at Staples (our vendor) what they thought about our current design on the navy shirt since they've worked with the shirt many times. She thinks the purple text on the back may get a bit lost but we won't know for sure until the pre-pro sample.

Hi John,

Michelle Marovich, the new head of Recruiting, would like to be able to use the Waldo on Unicorn/Making the magic happen logos designed for this hoodie as jpeg images for some upcoming, internal communications- messaging like powerpoints, our mana page redesign, etc.

Would you please also help us create two high resolution jpegs/images of each, the front and back of the Waldo sweatshirt, one with a white background and one transparent?

Thanks as always for your help! :)

Hi John,

Thanks for being in touch so quickly! No rush on the timing here, though by end of November would be ideal.

We're looking for high resolution jpeg images of both the logo on the front of the sweatshirt (Waldo) as well as the logo on the back (Making the Magic Happen text)- not images of the sweatshirt with the logos on them- just the logos themselves.

We'd like to have these logos on file to be used for internal team powerpoints, and communication of that nature (i.e. an image on a powerpoint slide). If possible, we would like a high resolution jpeg of each, with both a white background as well as one that is "transparent"- so it can overlap other items on the slide if needed.

Also, I'd commented a similar request on another bug, regarding the Mozilla Supreme Mozillian Wrangler t shirts- but that appears to have been cancelled. We were interested in receiving jpegs of each of those logos as well (the heart and hardware/the text logo on the back).

Thank you for your help- please let me know if you need any other details!

Not a problem, other than there will be an issue with having a white background, since the unicorn is white. This graphic will always be best placed on a dark background. I can save out as a jpg with a dark grey background as well as a transparent png...but this will need to be placed on something with contrast.

Here is a link to the files as mentioned above:

Would it also be possible to also have the text image of "Making the Magic Happen" altered, so that anything white becomes another color, perhaps gray or black? That way we could put it on a white slide/a white background without half of the image disappearing... :)
