If you are stepping in the debugger and exit the frame because of an exception, we stop and show <exception> in the variables view, however it doesn't have name, message, or stack properties. Obviously you can get the stack from the breadcrumbs, but it is very hard to figure out what exception was thrown and why if you don't have the message!
I think this is a dupe of 812764.
