From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.2) Gecko/20010717
BuildID: 2001071704
I have seen on recent builds (since a week or so) that when mozilla downloads
mail automatically (tested with pop mail), mozilla freezes until mail is
finished downloading. Pretty disturbing since i download mail every 5 minutes
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Let mozilla download mail
Actual Results: Freezes until mail is downloaded
Expected Results: Not freeze
May be in wrong component, may be a known issue, who knows?
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; OpenVMS AlphaServer_DS10_466_MHz; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030708
I have noticed the same problem, but even with more consequences:
Afterwards it is no longer possible to delete messages.
No other message can be read in the normal window, the message that is there
will remain there.
Double clicking on another message will however open that message in a separate
window.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; OpenVMS AlphaServer_DS10_466_MHz; en-US; rv:1.5a)
Gecko/20030721
I also noticed that it is no longer possible to post news messages after this
problem occurs. The only way to get things working again is to shutdown Mozilla
completely (not just mail/news) and restart.
In general it seems that doing any kind of activity with mail on just the moment
that a new mail message is being retrieved from the mail server will cause real
problems.
In my view this is a rather serious bug !!

Re: Comment #2
It doesn't seem that severe on Mac OS X using 1.5 RC1, but if I switch folders
while mail is being downloaded and then return to the inbox that mail is being
downloaded to, the inbox is blank until I restart MailNews (but not the entire
program).
OS: Linux → All
Hardware: PC → All
I have seen that problem as well. In general the problem seems to be that doing
anything with mail while new messages are retreived from the server may cause
all kind of assorted problems.
Another problem:
Mail is set up to retrieve new messages automatically every ? minutes. Sometimes
a pop-up window may appear when the mail server requests to re-enter the password.
If at the same time a file is downloaded from a browser (!) window, this
download will stall untill the password is entered !
It seems to me as if certain functions in mail are not seperated from other
functions in mail and / or the browser. I'm not a C-programmer, but could this
be a multi-threading problem ?
Anyhow, this problem has been around now for more then two years and it is quite
serious. Perhaps we should make it blocking for the 1.5 final ?
May I please ask to pay some attention to this problem?
At the moment I'm running Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; OpenVMS AlphaServer_DS10_466_MHz;
en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040621, and I still see some of the problems described in
this bug report.
My comment #5 is still valid, although some problems are less severe now.
I now have (at least) two problems:
1. When the (automatic) download of a message is started, I can not read
existing messages. When I click on a message, it will not open. I then know a
message is being downloaded, and I will wait untill the downloading has ended.
Then I can select another message, and read it. From there I can return to the
original message I wanted to read, and can read that as well.
2. It also happens that I try to delete a message, and nothing happens. Again I
then know that a download is in progress. When the download is over I can only
read messages by opening them in a new window (double-clicking), but deleting
messages is impossible. I have to restart Mozilla (not just mail) to get
everything back to normal.
