- I manually went offline which is unusual for me to do - I did so because of server problems (morning of 2013-08-21) 
- still offline, I sleeped PC and took it to work. 
- went back online about noon.
- used thunderbird in afternoon.
- 5pm sleep again and took it home. 
- used a bit in evening.
- computer was idle overnight, but did not hibernate nor go to sleep in that period.
- morning of 2013-08-22, thunderbird not sending nor receiving email.
 
restart thunderbird and everything is OK.
If I had been thinking clearly I might have tried offline+online
