This might be fixed by bug 877831 in TB25.  You can find TB25 at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ as Earlybird today, or in about a week as Beta.

Phil, are you still crashing on version 17?  And can you please update to version 24 and tell us whether it is equally unstable or stable?  And please tell us which addons you are using.

#20 crash signature for 17.0.8.

TB24 has no signatures with mozalloc_abort(char const* const) | NS_DebugBreak_P | nsACString_internal::Assign(nsACString_internal const&)

But it does have NS_DebugBreak, without the "_P" - namely mozalloc_abort(char const* const) | NS_DebugBreak | nsACString_internal::Assign(nsACString_internal const&) - as it's #4 topcrash

This is gone in version 24. I believe fixed by Hiro's patch in bug 877831

I'm unsure why I thought bug 877831 fixed this.
