Description

Mac OS 9.1, build 2001071903 (branch, not trunk):

Go to the URL specified and click on "Chat." It will ask you to enter a
nickname (any one will do from what I've seen). Once you do so, a Java applet
for chatting will load. The text that appears in this chat window is nothing
more than escape codes (I think that's the term for them). I am using the
latest version of MRJ (2.2.5). The chat room won't even BEGIN to load on
Netscape 6.1 PR1 but loads fine on Netscape Communicator 4.77.

Confirmed under 2001071903, except the results I see are a
"Java.lang.nullPointerException" error dialog. I'm also running MRJ 2.2.5 under Mac OS
9.1. It works under Mac IE 5.0 (2022).

Problem persists as noted earlier on build 2001080110 (0.9.3 branch). While I
do see the java.lang.nullPointerException quite often with Mozilla, I am not
seeing this here. I thought it might have been an MRJ problem until you
mentioned that IE handles it fine.

A similar problem occurs on this site:

http://registrar.ua.edu/

While the Java scrolling news applet is readable, the text styles that are
visible under Communicator 4.7x show up as their open and close tags under Mozilla.

Also note that if you click on the "DAG" link on that site, you get a
java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBounds exception twice. Under Communicator 4.7x, this
loads a Java applet that initially shows a button which upon clicking will
launch a new window with information related to degrees at the University of
Alabama.

(Just for clarification, "that site" mentioned in the previous comment is the UA
site, not the Big Brother site.)

This "Big Brother 2" web site in general has been very problematic for Netscape
6.1 -- it fails to recognize that I have Flash installed, and trying to load any
embedded RealPlayer video results in a crash or freeze. The site may not be
maintained for much longer now that the show has ended, but it would be nice for
future CBS web sites not to have these problems.

On build 2001121008 (Mac OS 9.2.2) I now get Java errors instead of any chat
loading. The first time I tried I crashed (after having visited many other
sites), but the second time it simply gave me the errors.

Original problem applet no longer exists, so this bug cannot be fixed. However,
the similar problem at http://registrar.ua.edu/ still exists and has been
reported as bug 149814.
