+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #893530 +++ <quote from bug 893530> Beauty of apps is one of the main aspects we are obliged to cover while developing Firefox OS. I've been recently working on an Arabic Firefox OS app for the Arabian Mozilla Community, one of the cons that I faced (or the con faced me.. dunno who faced who for sure..) is that the casual and standard font used in Firefox OS looks ugly WHEN used in Arabic, the app looked so boring, so I figured that choosing a famous and open source Arabic font will do the thing, and yes it did as it appears in the attachment. The font I chose called "Droid Arabic Naskh" and these are two references for it: 1 http://openfontlibrary.org/en/font/droid-arabic-naskh 2 http://www.google.com/fonts/earlyaccess I strongly hope and suggest we work on this bug because Arabic fonts either developed by Mozilla or adopted will surely add a *NATIVE* beautiful view. </quote> Ahmed has expertise in Arabic fonts and advises us to change of font for arabic text on our websites as opensans lookis okayish in arabic but is far from perfect. I think this is something we should discuss, Ahmed has a lot more expertise than we have regarding fonts for rtl locales. Ahmed, can you provide specific example of our font not respecting fully guidelines forwriting Arabic? Thanks

1st Example that little padding in the red square belongs to the previous letter, is not supposed to be get past the next letter, it's being repeated many times. Also in the picture there is a comparison of the readability of both fonts for a user entering the site, unfortunately with Open Sans help links are almost invisible unless you really pay attention

2nd example, this is globally how it looks using the font suggested in this bug, compared to https://www-demo2.allizom.org/b/ar/firefox/new/ Of course CSS styles could be applied to more sharpen it. :)

Got it, thanks. Sean and I aren't really experts in how things look in Arabic, so if you guys feel that Droid Arabic is a more appropriate font then we're ok making that switch.

Thanks John, we'll work with Webdev on a patch for mozilla.org as a first step then :)

Adding Persian localizers as it is likely to benefit them too. Arash, Ehsan, can you tell us if Droid Arabic Naskh is also a better font for your locale than what we currently use on mozilla.org? (https://www-dev.allizom.org/b/fa/firefox/new/) The font page says is has full support for Farsi so we could use it for you as well

(In reply to Pascal Chevrel:pascalc from comment #8) > The font page says is has full support for Farsi so we could use it for you > as well Pascal, I think it's alright. Droid Naskh is the default font in Android phones (while using Persian) and I think it's pretty. The font is also available in Google Fonts http://www.google.com/fonts/earlyaccess

For Persian, Omid is suggesting IranianSans instead : example: http://www.webadvice.ir/ source: http://fonts.gexek.com/IranianSans Arash, would that be better?

IranianSans is a much better choice for Persian than Droid Arabic Naskh. In general, Droid Arabic Naskh is very much tailored towards Arabic. There is very little Persian content out there written in that style of font.

In addition to what Arash said, although IranianSans looks better visually, it's more standard in line-height, letter and word spacing and for normal, bold and emphasized texts. Also it has acceptable readability in 10px-60px font size. It could be used for headlines, sub-headlines and normal texts so we do not have to user extra fonts for headlines.

Bug 944269 has been fixed which fixes this too. Preview: https://www.allizom.org/ar/ https://www.allizom.org/ar/firefox/new/ Or at least it's now fine with Arabic. I guess Persian language needs a new bug (if that's still a problem) since it is requesting a different font. :)
