As discussed at sprint planning today, IMAP already does a lot of the expunging legwork, but we also happened to disable the UI for changing that setting at all in both 1.1 and 1.2. Bug 916090 currently calls for using a number of messages as the limit, but it doesn't go into the existence of multiple folders, etc. There's going to be a need to discuss this more with UX in terms of folders. We are side-stepping a lot of the issues involved by initially implementing only leave-on-server semantics, so in theory we should not be resulting in data-loss or needing to express that to the user. In practice, we may need to amend leave-on-server based on the realities of the limitations of the actual servers our partners tell us about.
