We can use component watching to achieve the same end result, and it messes with automatically updating the Assigned To field in the mc-merge script. Luke, as module owner can you sign off on this change?

Go for it; I've never heard of anyone depending on 'general@js.bugs'.

can you file a new bug for that please.  there's 10703 bugs with that assignee (of which 3060 are unresolved), so we'll need to write a script to update the database directly to avoid triggering bugmail.
