Hello all,

I manage the @Mozilla twitter account, ( http://twitter.com/mozilla ) and would like to place a link to this account on the footer alongside the @Firefox link.

We are striving to capture content, updates and conversation with the Mozillian global community on this channel, and believe that it has a place on the Mozilla.org website.
Checking in to see how this bug is progressing.
Right now the link in the footer just says Twitter. Since we will have 2 twitter links, the link copy can be:
@Mozilla
@Firefox
Assignee: mitchell → nobody
Severity: normal → enhancement
Component: Miscellaneous → Pages & Content
OS: Windows 7 → All
Product: mozilla.org → www.mozilla.org
Hardware: x86_64 → All
Facebook is also: https://www.facebook.com/mozilla and https://www.facebook.com/Firefox

Instead of adding extra links, I personally would like to see a link to the global Social Directory. While it was WONTFIXed in Bug 832224, I have made it at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Social_Directory

Because Mozilla has a bunch of social media accounts, there should be an easy way to find those, IMO. Many companies and universities have such a Social Directory page.
I'm hoping specifically for the twitter link to appear on the website. I would be fine with other Mozilla channels to be listed only on a wiki if that ensures the twitter link can be added.

The main goal is to improve how we promote and discuss *all* Mozilla projects, mission and community initiatives via @Mozilla twitter, and so having this as a link option on the Mozilla website is an important strategic goal for growing this channel and expanding the discussion beyond the Firefox product and channels.

:)

Yeah, since this is mozilla.org, it should promote the Mozilla accounts. Here's a mock-up of the site footer including @Mozilla.

*by the way - love the wiki - it's a really valuable resource to have when on-ramping new folks into the right directions for news and community participation :)
Replica: please take a look at the mock-up in my comment 6. If you are OK with that, I'll send a pull request to land it.

Hi Kohei, a few more people need to take a look at this bug before it's approved. I'm going to add John Slater from the creative team and Michaela Thayer who runs our social communication channels so that they can be involved in the discussion for approval.

Hello Kohei - I am fine with this, and await the other comments from John and Michaela.

As I mentioned before, I am fine if the @Mozilla twitter account is the only addition, should the facebook link be an issue.

Many thanks!

+1 from me. Sounds great :). Thanks for looping me in.

So should I remove the link to facebook.com/mozilla?
Rebeccah, do you oversee facebook.com/mozilla as well?
I do - if we're fine to keep it - please do. :)
I'm not sure how the different localized versions of Firefox are built. In this helps with what should go on the footer for different builds:

The Mozilla Firefox Page (https://www.facebook.com/Firefox) serves daily content in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Indonesian, Polish, Greek, and Hungarian. What content people see is dependent on people's Facebook language preferences.

@Firefox Twitter serves daily content in English.

@Firefox_ES serves daily content in Spanish.

@FirefoxBrasil serves daily content in Portuguese.

Regarding adding the @Mozilla Twitter link and the Mozilla Facebook link, I think this makes sense. But we should definitely make it simple for the user to understand.

Mozilla Facebook
Firefox Facebook
Mozilla Twitter
Firefox Twitter

...Just want to make sure we don't cause user confusion.
We do also have this bug open to add the Spanish and Portuguese Twitter feeds - and I'd still like to do that as well

We can easily change the Twitter link for the es-ES and pt-BR users if we want :)

mthayer: Do you want to see such a simple text links?
I'm all for simple-ness! But will leave it up to your expertise what is going to be most impactful on the page.
I like this well enough for the thoroughness of the proposed solution, although it is pretty wordy.

A small twitter and facebook icon plus a small 'globe' icon or 'link' icon for the webpage link to affiliates could reduce text if needed. But after typing it out, it doesn't solve the last link text length. (see below)

[tw] Mozilla
[fb] Mozilla
[tw] Firefox
[fb] Firefox
[O] Firefox Affiliates

I'm tempted to go with what we have after playing that out.
If we use icons,

[tw] Mozilla
[tw] Firefox
[fb] Mozilla
[fb] Firefox
[O] Firefox Affiliates

may look better.

I don't have a small 'globe' icon, so this mock-up just shows the Firefox icon.
I know it adds a lot of text to the page, but I'd prefer to list the Spanish and Brazil Twitters out on the page for Spanish and Portuguese speakers who might be reading the page in English.

Also, I feel like the icons add too much busy-ness and clutter. We don't need to be advertising those brands.
We can change the Twitter link on pages only under /es-ES/ and /pt-BR/, depending on the page's locale, not the user's locale. It's probably a better experience for Spanish/Portuguese speakers. If they visit pages under /en-US/, the link still points the English twitter account.

For the design, our final choice might be text only links like Attachment 831083 [details].

About the link text, "Firefox Twitter" can be a problem, as it sounds a product or service name. "Firefox on Twitter" would be better.

Works for me.
Not to drag this out, but I think I'd like to get some input from Matej too. It looks super wordy to me.

Matej - I'll put time on the calendar to discuss next week.

I think "Mozilla on Twitter" (etc.) works well, but I think it's also OK to use the icons, as we do elsewhere.

Jen, let's discuss more next week. Thanks.

Hi Kohei-

Could we try:

Mozilla on Twitter
Firefox on Twitter
Mozilla on Facebook
Firefox on Facebook

Thx,
Jen

Here you are!
I'm happy with this. :)
Note that Bug 928569 has added the "Donate" link to the footer. Still wordy but are you okay with that?
Yes - in fact, we'll be using the @mozilla accounts to heavily support that Donate campaign - and as long as we're all cool with what you have here, I'm really happy to move forward with it. :)
