Which version of Firefox were you using? Which OS and device, and which file? Do you see the same thing using Firefox Beta on Google Play?

There is no official Android 4.3 system update for the Galaxy SII, is this a custom 3rd party ROM?
Using my SII on the official Android 4.1.2 (TouchWiz) version using Nightly (10/07), downloading a test APK on http://nightly.mozilla.org, I am not seeing these problems. I also tried saving multiple files off my personal Dropbox and saving a webpage as a PDF and all successfully downloaded without issue. In all cases, the browser remained active and was running in the foreground.
Can you capture and attach a logcat from the device showcasing the issue you are seeing? Perhaps there's something in the system logs that would lead to the cause for closing the browser.
