User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20131003030203 Steps to reproduce: Everytime Fx updates it is automatically downloaded regardless of settings. Actual results: Firefox will automatically update regardless of update settings and there doesnt seem to be any way to prevent it. Similar to: 598419? Expected results: The user should be able to accept or decline the download.
Sure would like to see this get resolved. I have set the update to "Check for updates but let me choose" so it doesn't automatically download and update. Now if I leave my PC and the dialog box appears it continues to open a new dialog about every 30 seconds or so and just keeps opening another after another until I go thru and close them all.
(In reply to Bruce from comment #0) > Everytime Fx updates it is automatically downloaded regardless of settings. It should automatically check for updates only if you go in Help/About page. Are you doing that ?

I have the settings Check for updates but let me choose... If I step away from my PC I may come back and find 25 dialog boxes asking to download and install the latest. I just close them all. I had the settings "Never update" but that still downloaded the nightly as well. Im on a limited data plan and don't want to have a 30MB file download every time nightly updates. I would like to continue to participate in the testing but selectively update about every 2-3 days.

Oh...and No I am not checking thru the Help/About dialog box. It just pops up in the bottom right corner of the Fx window asking to download and install the version...
The settings to 'Never update', or Advise me to update available, has not worked in some time I believe. The ONLY way I can prevent updates from happening on Win7 x64 is to 'disable' the Mozilla Maintenance Service in 'Services' section of Windows. You can then open 'Help>About' and click 'Check for Updates' at your leisure without being pushed the latest build.

Jim, I believe you are right too but is that the answer? I have never intentionally used the Mozilla Maintenance Service for Fx. It is just concerning that I can't stop the download and I get all those dialog box openings if I happen to step away while online. Thanks for all the good work you guys are doing. It is appreciated.
I was able to get a good screen capture. Here is a good example of what I am talking about. Right now my settings are "Check for updates, but let me choose which ones to install". The same happens on never check. I will not use the automatically update as I want to control my own updates. http://gotnarcosis.com/brucewittmeier/images/FxUpdate.jpg

Errr... they *should* work, though. Rob?

(note also the recent duplicates :-( )
Definitely should work and it definitely used to. :( I'll take a look sometime in the next week.

The only thing I can think of as to what is going on is that an update was already in progress and then the option to never check for updates was selected or a different profile was used without that option selected. I have tried to reproduce using your steps on Win32 and was unable to reproduce. I'm going to try on Win64 now. Have you used other profiles? I don't recall when the about dialog was changed but it used to always check and apply which could have caused this when opening the about dialog. Could you set the option to never, not use any other profiles, check if you can reproduce this, and report in this bug if you can? Thanks

I have discovered that what may have been causing my PC to auto-update was using multiple profiles with the -no-remote option. I do this to allow testing addons for example while concurrently using my Daily profile and without restarting my daily. If Fx defaults to auto-update at installation and I happen to run an unmodified profile while using my daily profile it would set the update flag and would update all profiles. My daily is set to "...let me choose" but other profiles may not be if I don't make that minor tweak to each additional profile. The question might be "Is there a global variable flag set for the update?". I do find some of the "messages" regarding actions to be a little misleading. For example: In the "about:addons" page if you click the gear to "View Available Updates", one of the picks is "Check for updates". If you click that msg, the message is "Updating Addons". << I believe this is only Checking for what is available. I don't normally use the "Check for updates" from the Help/About Firefox dialog but do updates almost daily by downloading the Fx Nightly directly from the ftp server. But the Help/About Firefox method might have a mis-leading message as well. I just don't remember. But again if the "...Update..." flag gets set by another profile it will happen to all. I hope this makes sense. Thanks to all you developers for making Firefox the best ever browser :)

All my profiles are now set to "Never update" and I don't believe I have seen an auto-update other than the addons. That is where I think the message needs to be corrected. It seems to "Check", then indicate "Updating" (but it is really checking) then "Asks" if I want to update the addons 1 by 1. I will try a few days to NOT open other profiles and report back.

Please file a Toolkit -> Add-ons Manager bug for this additional issue. Thanks!

The question might be "Is there a global variable flag > set for the update?". Firefox doesn't have global settings for all profiles or all users that can be managed from within Firefox. I think an add-on installed into the user add-on location should be able to override the value for all of your profiles.
I believe I can safely say the issues I thought I had with updating without my approval came from using multiple profiles and in doing so I did not want to touch settings to retain the "clean" integrity - so some of them have the auto-update flag set by default. If I opened any with the flag set it would launch the update process which I thought I was blocking in my daily profile. As far as I am concerned this bug can be closed a fixed/resolved. I will file a bug for the wording/messages that appear during the update process. Thanks for the effort.
