Steps to reproduce:

1. Plugged in laptop (Thinkpad w520, Windows 7) with power, mouse, headphones, monitor
2. Turned on machine
3. Started firefox
4. Moved firefox to the attached monitor (not the laptop screen)
5. Open a couple tabs (doesn't really matter which ones)
6. Get called to a meeting, unplug all cords
7. Firefox gets moved to laptop screen (as expected)
8. Click the + for new tab
9. Attempt to type in the URL

Alternatively
8. Open up a dropdown selection


Actual results:

When typing in the URL, it will get the first letter, but then freeze while it is trying to populate the dropdown URL box.


Expected results:

Firefox should not freeze.

Also possibly related, but it may just be a Windows thing, the wheel scrolling appears to be reset, but changing the setting in the mouse properties and applying seems to get it put back correctly.

Does the hang still happen in safe mode?  Try in safe mode (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode) and with a clean profile (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles).

If it hangs permanently, try the directions on https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/How_to_Report_a_Hung_Firefox.  When you have successfully crashed the browser, please post the crash ID in this bug.

You might be right that this is a windows thing.  I have similar things happen when I undock my laptop at work where i have 2 monitors with multiple different applications, not just Firefox.  Actually it is worse when I go the other way form the laptop monitor to the 2 external monitors.  That way almost NEVER works.  I end up having to reboot.

I think you are right on with this.  I just shutdown when docking or undocking now.  This issue is not specific to Firefox.

I know that when you have a "new" monitor or remote desktop, that Firefox will go through a resource intensive process.  Perhaps revising all the pages for the new graphics - I don't know exactly what.
