I'm pretty sure we didn't change anything in this area in 24.0.1, which was a very small set of focused fixes. Are you sure it wasn't just a glitch on your mail server/network?

I just made a new trial. I reinstalled version 24.0.1. The password window do not show up.
Just before installing this, I checked with version 24.0, everything was ok.
Can you try TB safe mode (Help->restart with addons disabled) in TB 24?
Also what about bug 901329 bug 920230 bug 920755 ? Are you using some Google calendars?

Safe mode does not help and I'm not using Google calendars.
As you pointed to the ad-ons, I wanted to check which ad-ons I had. Searching this,
I selected the tab "Get Ads-On" and the following error appeared:
Unable to connect
The connection was refused when attempting to contact services.addons.mozilla.org.
Maybe this will help you.
Thank you.
I forgot to mention that when I reverted to v 24.0, the "Get Ads-On" was working again.
Looks like your antivirus/firewall has noticed TB binary has changed and is blocking internet access now? Can you check that somehow?
I looked at my firewall setting (ZoneAlarm) before posting this case.
At that time it seemed to me, that Thunderbird had the authorization
to access internet.
However, following your advice, I checked again, and this time I saw
that the version shown by ZoneAlarm was not 24.0.1 but a much older
one (14...).
In fact ZoneAlarm remembers all older versions. To be able to access
to the authorization of v 24.0.1 I had to delete successively all
older entries in ZoneAlarm (there is perhaps simpler way).
At the end, I saw that v24.0.1 had not the required authorizations (why
was it so? Mystery!) and now Thunderbird is working again.
Sorry for for having disturbed you. Shame on me.
Thank you for your help an your product!
Thanks for checking again :)
It is a mystery to me why this happens with some Firewalls/Antivirus. If the software (e.g. TB) changes, it should prompt the user whether to allow the SW again. Instead it happens that it sometimes silently blocks the SW (or do the users just not notice the prompt?). This happens to many users and we get many reports about it.
