This is because of our code for handling the thumbnail generation and handling better defaulting. Causing line is https://github.com/mozilla/popcorn.webmaker.org/blob/master/public/src/editor/project-editor.js#L357 which triggers a dirty state.
I know you fixed this temporarily, or made it not noticeable in another ticket. I wonder if you could add the ticket or patch that work was done in, in this ticket for later? I may forget if it is not in the ticket.
