Steps to reproduce:

when retrieving messages, i very often get a message box saying: "The messages
could not be filtered to folder 'xxx' because writing to folder failed. Verify
that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file
system, then try again." messages which get this failure message are put in the "Inbox."

this happens almost every day with filtering to different folders failing each day. it's not the same folders that are failing to be filtered.

for example, yesterday i had 21 new messages. of these, only 1 did not have a filter and got placed in the inbox. of the remaining 20, 12 were properly filtered to their folders, but for 8 others for which there were filters, they did not filter to their folders but gave the message cited above. so these 8 went to the inbox. when i use "tools/run filters on folder" on the inbox, these 8 are filtered to their proper folder.

today i had 20 new messages and all filtered properly, including to folders that failed to work yesterday.

this issue was first reported in 2001 by berend veldkamp and was closed with status "resolved incomplete." i tried to revive that report but wayne mery advises me to file a new bug report: "the original report is ancient, plus closed 5 years ago."

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Retrieve messages

I have also been experiencing this bug in Kubuntu 12.04, ever since Thunderbird was updated to version 24.0. Previous versions never threw this error. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but my local folders location is on a flash drive in an encrypted TrueCrypt file, which is FAT32-formatted.

The Thunderbird error always says that writing to the folder failed, but, I have no problems writing to the folder manually. Also, the folder that fails seems to vary from session to session.
The same as bug 917769 ?
Yes, it does appear to be the same bug.
Still happening as of Earlybird 33.0a2 (2014-08-08). This is infrequent, but more likely to arise when downloading a few hundred messages at the same time (as after being away for a weekend). My platform is Mac OS X Mavericks.
I'm having the same issue with Thunderbird 31.3.0 on Mac OS 10.6.8.
"The messages could not be filtered to folder 'xxx' because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again."

My filters were working well so far, but since about a week, emails are not filtered on only one of my POP accounts (yahoo); I have similar filters on other accounts (IMAP). I get that alert message everyday at startup and then no emails are filtered throughout the day for that account.

It's really annoying.
I'm on Thunderbird v 35.0 and just started getting this message yesterday.

Windows 7 64 bit. POP e-mail
yeah let's call this a dup, and reopen if the eventual fix in bug 931303 (or it's blockers) doesn't fix it
