Description

I lack "Compact folders" function in account popup menu. The function is now in
File menu, but since "compact folder" apears in folder popup, it would be more
consistent to have the "compact folders" in account popup. I also suggest to
rename it to "Compact all folders".

But we're now talking about version 6+ now. All the proposed changes just add
additional items w/o changing currently existing. So all these won't break
backward compatibility.

If anyone is interested I'd like to suggest more keyboard shortcuts. I can be
more exact when done with the doc that Seth mentioned. *If* that kind of change
is possible, of course.

Currently the context menu of a selected mail folder says "Compact This Folder",
while the menu item says "Compact Folders", yet both do the same thing, namely
compact just the selected folder. According to the spec (and jglick), the
behaviour should be changed to match the spec, and the current wording.

There should be the possibility to compact just the selected folder, or to
compact all folders of an account (and that would then also allow a "Compact
(All) Folders" in the context menu of an account. Like in 4.x, the menu item
should switch between "Compact All Folders" and "Compact This Folder" depending
on whether an account or a single folder is selected.

This may be low priority, but then at least the spec and the wording should be
fixed (patch already attached to bug 94251).

4x does not show "Compact Folders" when you right click on an acct. The only
thing that needs to be done here is to display "compact this folder" under
File menu when an imap folder is selected. For local the current behavior
is fine.

As a user of IMAP there are a number of deficiencies in the current Moz feature
set. As are described in a number of other bugs (86161, 75927, 94251, etc).

1. The wording on the File->Compact Folders menu choice might be fine for Local
but it is incorrect for IMAP in Mark as Deleted mode. It does not compact all
the folders. Either the behaviour or the wording needs to change.

2. There is no _quick_ way to purge a single (current) folder of mail marked for
deletion. Outlook Express has a Purge tool bar item. Netscape 4.x has a
shortcut key. (Alt/Ctrl+k). Yes one can use the current behaviour of
File->Compact Folders or use the context menu on a single folder. However if
you are like me and use Mark as Deleted mode you use these menu choices _a lot_
and it soon gets tiresome. I much prefered NS 4.x's ctrl/alt+k!

I see people quoting what the "spec" says. Well if these particular issues
arn't addressed in the spec then I think the spec is deficient and needs to be
amended.

Refer to bug 64751:
It should be "Compact Folders" for POP, Local, IMAP "Move to Trash" mode and
"Delete Immediately" modes.

Refer to bug 94251 and bug 105925:
File Menu should change from "Compact Folders" to "Compact This Folder"
for IMAP Mark as Deleted mode.

I'm confused: I'd like to see functionality that really does compact *all*
folders for IMAP mark as deleted mode; it seems to me that neither 94251 nor
93001 directly address this. Should there be a new bug to request this feature?

I'm also confused; I don't see why "Compact folders" (all folders in the
account) isn't seen as desirable, for POP and Local Folders as well as for IMAP.

Currently (per bug 142748) "Compact Folders" (the File menu item) is only
enabled when a single folder is selected, which implies that it's the equivalent
of selecting "Compact This Folder". However, contrary to comment 6, selecting
"Compact Folders" compacts all the folders in the account. (At least, it does
this for POP, under 1.3 Final.) The lack of "Compact [All] Folders" on the
context menu for the account is a subtle reinforcement of whatever coding
decision led to that bug.

What is the process for getting the specification updated? Where is the
specification for the conditions for disabling a menu item?

Shouldn't this bug be an Enhancement, rather than Normal?
mass re-assign.

+1

We should be able to compact *all* folders across the entire account (or maybe
even across all accounts).
