There is a group of people that are just interested (or they just have time) on helping locally in physical events and there is no are of interest right now to handle these requests.

This is relevant for Spanish were we have a lot of countries, but I think it's also important for English, where someone from Canada wants to help locally and can get a local contact auto-response.

The same is true in my local community. Many are non-technical but want to be involved if there's a local physical event. Defining what this would look like and a contribution path for it would be fantastic!
My idea for Spanish is to send an auto-response with links to contact local groups in charge of events in all Spanish speaking countries and also the link to the Mozilla Hispano events team, which aims to integrate all local events teams to share experiences and support each others.
I'm not sure if this bug is ready for mozilla.org to work on until there's further discussion about what exactly we want to implement. Is there a Community or People team product category we could move this to so that it gets the discussion it needs?
Chelsea and David-

Any thoughts on this?

Thx,
Jen
Hey Jennifer,

Is this for /contribute?

Cheers,
C
Chelsea, yes.
I think there's a bigger conversation going on about this that I'm not completely up to speed on. I know Brian King had been working on /contribute in the past. I've cc'd him as he might know where those conversations and plans ended up. Sorry, kind of a useless answer I know.
A quick fix might be to point to reps events, e.g.

https://reps.mozilla.org/events/#/period/future/search/spain/

However, /contribute is language aware but not geo aware so in many cases we won't be able to hone in on a particular country.
What we want to get here is a way for people to tell us they are interested in contributing to events, not just show them coming events and so they have to figure out how to get involved.

Same as other areas, we want an auto-reply with relevant resources to get involved with local event team in their country.

While /contribute is not geo aware, we recently updated the map on
https://reps.mozilla.org/events/#/period/future/ to make it geo aware. It displays a 'Share location?' dialog, and if you say yes, it shows you events in your local area on the map. That could be helpful, if you want to link to that page from /contribute.

This sounds like it would be good to discuss on the community-building mailing list.

Now is a good time for these sorts of discussions since the current /contribute page has 15 years of Mozilla content on it that will be getting out of date early next year.

In terms of next steps for the page in general, I think that we want a Pathways Working Group to form to discuss what requirements need to be in the new version of the page in order to get contributors onto the relevant pathways for their skills and interests.

I actually think folks who *can't* figure out how to get involved are new enough to the community that inviting them to come to an event by showing them what's going on near them, and inviting them to "say hi" to the organizers is a better for on-boarding. If they're interested in events, they should start by going to one. It's more likely that folks will be amazed/inspired, then get more deeply involved.

I'm not fully against the idea of LOCAL contact information, but in our case (Webmaker) we wouldn't be able to auto reply that. Our initial CTAs are inclusive to the public.

With Webmaker events (Maker Party esp), it's not *just* Mozilla Kool-Aid drinkers, it's people who just showed up because they want to teach the web or they want to make something or they heard "a big tech company like Mozilla" is going to be there. We do lots of engagement to get them thinking about the broader mission, Mozilla as an non-profit, open source, participatory culture.

+1 to David's comment that it's a good time to talk about this page. If it would be helpful to the Pathways Working Group, we could do user personas for our different constituents.

(FWIW we also geo-locate, and one of the Education links goes here: https://webmaker.org/en-US/events/ )
We're doing a refresh of /contribute and taking down the 15 years slide show this month but it doesn't include any update to contributor onboarding paths as discussed here. Is this bug still valid? Sounds like we still need consensus on next steps.
We'll do a second, more comprehensive redesign of /contribute later in 2014. I'll start a tracking bug for that and add this as blocking so that we don't lose it.
We are including this feature in the new /contributor redesign

That's great! Could you link to a bug for that feature? I'm curious to learn more.
