>>Project/Request Title: [VTCS] Moz.org Homepage Banner >>Project Overview: Firefox has entered into a partnership with Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. The Triple Crown of surfing includes the three final surfing events that award a World Championship (Vans World Cup; Reef Hawaiian Pro, Billabong Pipe Masters). The events are streamed live on the Web with commentary in multiple languages. Firefox is looking to roll out this partnership as part of the Firefox OS launch in Brazil (and possibly Mexico). Brazil is number two in terms of views on the Vans Triple Crown live Web stream. In 2012 nearly 1MM visitors from Brazil visited the Triple Crown webcast. The Triple Crown runs Nov. 12 - Dec. 20, 2013. VTCS Website: http://vanstriplecrownofsurfing.com/ Creative Brief: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nAggMc2cGyhARwb7Ou5WgMnyO6FbSfXU8AOHpHw8OXI/edit Basecamp site: https://basecamp.com/1897137/projects/4083604-vans-triple-crown-of This request is for a moz.org homepage promo banner to promote the VTCS. The messaging that Jen B and Pete discussed is: - Headline: VTCS with a focus on a "It adapts so you can too" message - CTA: "Get the VTCS App in the Marketplace" Design will use the VTCS creative look and feel. Required Elements: - CTA - App image - Firefox logo - VTCS logo Please LMK if you need additional direction from Jen B and me >>Creative Specs & Deliverables: Homepage tile for the new moz.org homepage design >>Launch Date: 2013-11-12 >>Creative Due Date: 2013-11-06 >>Mozilla Goal: All >>Points of Contact: jbertsch@mozilla.com

Lee - there are more detailed guideline from Craig about designing tiles for the new homepage design here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=925904#c8
I'm a little confused about the direction here. "It adapts…" is Firefox OS messaging, but we'll be speaking to desktop and Android users as well with this. And it doesn't really fit with the rest of the campaign, which is all about connecting people to things they love. Here's what I think would work with our other messaging and assets: [COLLAPSED STATE] Live what you love » [EXPANDED STATE] Stream the surf Firefox connects you to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and all the things you love. Don't miss a second of the action with our exclusive app. Get it from the Marketplace »
(In reply to Matej Novak [:matej] from comment #2) > I'm a little confused about the direction here. Could we please have two versions for Firefox OS / Desktop markets, please? For Firefox OS, the copy above is perfect. For Desktop, can we please change to (feel free to rework): [COLLAPSED STATE] Live what you love » [EXPANDED STATE] Stream the surf Firefox connects you to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and all the things you love. Don't miss a second of the action with Firefox. Learn More >>
Hi Lizz- At this point with the hompeage redesign, I don't think that we can add the complexity of segmenting by market. Thx, Jen
It was also my understanding that this app would work for desktop users. If that's not the case, this promo will be confusing for many users.
Agreed - I think it will be best if we default to the desktop message for the homepage.
Also - the app does work for desktop.
Here are 4 mockups for visual reference (using Matej's copy from Comment #2) in 1024, 768, and 320px
Hey Lee, those look good. The only thing I'd note is that I don't think we're using product logos on the expanded states anymore. It also makes it feel like we're doubling up on Firefox OS since we already have a separate promo for that next to this one. Thanks.
Awesome, thanks Lee. One concern is that it seems very Vans-heavy to me...did you experiment with other options that would switch the balance around?
I could try to switch the balance, but based on how heavy the branding of the other promos are, I lead with the VTCS creative look and feel. "This request is for a moz.org homepage promo banner to promote the VTCS." from Comment#0 Is this a matter of making the VTCS logo smaller? (In reply to John Slater from comment #10) > Awesome, thanks Lee. One concern is that it seems very Vans-heavy to > me...did you experiment with other options that would switch the balance > around?
Hey all, I agree w/ John - it kind of looks like an ad for Vans specifically, especially in some of the collapsed states where all you see is the Vans logo. Also, could we potentially use the Anodyne font here? Or is the font used required? I just think the copy looks really small against the creative and gets a little lost as is. Re: Messaging, can you please give me more detail on why we can't do segmented messaging? The app does work on Desktop, but we're most likely no longer driving Desktop users to that page, because it seems like we're not going to be ready to highlight Desktop Apps publicly. So, right now, the plan is to drive to a blog post. In that blog post will be a link to the App landing page, as well as more info around the general sponsorship. So, if we can only have one message, we should drive to the blog post because it contains the link to the App Page + more, so it's appropriate for all markets. So, can we please use the copy in Comment 3 (or a reworked version of that) if we can only have one message? Thanks! Lizz
Hi Lizz- Fx OS markets are defined by country - so we use geolocation technology to sniff a user's physical location and show them the right content on the /firefox/os page - because the phone is on sale by country. The hompepage is currently localized by browser language setting, so we use a user's browser language setting (which isn't tied to which country they are located in) to make sure we show a user the language they prefer to read in. Adding the geolocation ability to the homepage isn't a small task, because we'd have to test the impact of adding it to page load times (and possibly have to explore new ways of implementing it for the homepage because it receives such a large volume of traffic) and go through a Privacy review for this new use case. Ping me on IRC (jbertsch) if you want to discuss it more? Thx, Jen
How about the below? It gives it a little more context and talks about our various products and platforms. [COLLAPSED STATE] Live what you love » [EXPANDED STATE] Stream the surf Firefox connects you to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and all the things you love. Don't miss a second of the action on your desktop, Android device or Firefox OS smartphone. Learn more »
Breaking: Lee is reworking the visuals to include Live What You Love as part of the image, so we'll need something else for the text below.
If possible, we shouldn't put text in the image for localization.
Pending a decision on comment 16, if we do use "Live what you love" as part of the image, here are two options for the collapsed state: 1. Swap "Live what you love" and "Stream the surf" between the two states 2. Use "Vans Triple Crown" on the collapsed state I don't like 2. as much because then it doesn't have a verb in it like all the others, but it could work. I'll also point out that "Live what you love" is a fair deal longer when translated, which could be an extra problem on the image.
What are the l10n needs for this promo? Pete & Kristin were very explicit in their desire to have Live What You Love in the image, so it would be nice if we didn't have to go to plan C here. Out of the options above, I like #1.
Next iterations using "Live what you love" as main visual
That looks good, Lee, but let's use "Live what you love" as the expanded state headline (that can be done in implementation, I figure).
I'm confused as to the difference btw page 1 (wider promos) and page 3 (narrower).
Page 3 is what you may see viewing the page from portrait orientation on a tablet. (In reply to John Slater from comment #21) > I'm confused as to the difference btw page 1 (wider promos) and page 3 > (narrower).
(In reply to Matej Novak [:matej] from comment #14) > How about the below? It gives it a little more context and talks about our > various products and platforms. > > > [COLLAPSED STATE] > > Live what you love » > > > [EXPANDED STATE] > > Stream the surf > > Firefox connects you to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and all the things > you love. Don't miss a second of the action on your desktop, Android device > or Firefox OS smartphone. > > Learn more » Hi Matej, We probably shouldn't refer to specific products because right now there's a lot of back and forth about whether we should highlight Desktop and Android compatibility for apps in the Marketplace. So could we just say, "Firefox connects you to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and all the things you love. Don't miss a second of the action with Firefox" and then point to the blog post? I'm just afraid that if we say "desktop and android" and then PM/Apps team/PR decide that we're not going to talk about Apps on Android and Desktop in the blog post, it will be super confusing to the user when there's nothing in the blog post, but the homepage promo refers to Android and Desktop.
Hi Lizz- Do you know what languages the blog post will be in? Thx, Jen
Hey Lizz, My thinking was that you'd still be able to watch through the website on your desktop or Android browser, that's why I didn't say anything about the app in that version. Is there a chance we won't talk about the browser at all in the blog post? Because a lot of the other pieces we've written refer to it. My only issue with the copy from comment 3 (and comment 23) is that it starts and ends with "Firefox" in a pretty short space so it sounds a little like "Firefox lets you do this with Firefox." If we really can't call out the products, I'll come up with another version in the morning. Thanks.
(In reply to Matej Novak [:matej] from comment #25) > Hey Lizz, > > My thinking was that you'd still be able to watch through the website on > your desktop or Android browser, that's why I didn't say anything about the > app in that version. Hi Matej - I think that's a really good point and one I'm happy to iterate (and defend, if need be!) to anyone who may have concerns. Let's stay with your copy from Comment 14. I was also concerned starting and ending with "Firefox", so I'm right there with you on that point.
(In reply to Jennifer Bertsch [:jbertsch] from comment #24) > Hi Lizz- > > Do you know what languages the blog post will be in? > > Thx, > Jen I just checked with PR - it will be in EN, PT-BR and ES.
Sounds great. Thanks, Lizz!
Clarification from Lizz re CTA: Lizz Noonan Hey all! CTA UPDATE!! After much input and discussion from many teams...CTAs are final! The CTA for ALL markets (FxOS and Desktop) on Social Media, Paid Media, Email, moz.org banner and banner ads for the Vans website is: "GET THE VTCS APP" driving to the Marketplace page: https://marketplace.firefox.com/app/vtcs The Snippet will have the same video for all locales, with the Firefox OS Market CTA being "GET THE APP" (linking to the Marketplace page) and the Desktop CTA being "WATCH THE VTCS" driving to the PR blog post. LMK if there are any questions or if I missed any channels. Thanks! Lizz
Sounds like that means we're going back to the copy in comment 2. Just to clarify, is "Get the VTCS app" the actual wording we'll use everywhere? I prefer "Get it from the Marketplace" for this execution as that promotes one of our properties. I'm also not sure everyone in this channel will know what "VTCS" is immediately and we've just said "app" at the end of the copy so I don't think we have to repeat it in the CTA. Does that make sense?
(In reply to Jennifer Bertsch [:jbertsch] from comment #29) > > The Snippet will have the same video for all locales, with the Firefox OS > Market CTA being "GET THE APP" (linking to the Marketplace page) and the > Desktop CTA being "WATCH THE VTCS" driving to the PR blog post. Reading this again, I realize I'm not sure what snippet (or video) this is referring to. I just did a search and don't see a bug for snippet copy. Is that something we need?

Makes sense and yes, I agree. Copy from Comment 2 is ready to implement, then? Will switch over to Lee if so~
Seems we haven't yet resolved using (or not) using "Live what you love" (+ L10n in ES and PT-BR) in the main visual. Can anyone clarify? (In reply to Jennifer Bertsch [:jbertsch] from comment #16) > If possible, we shouldn't put text in the image for localization.
Hey Lizz- Do we have "Live what you love" localized into es and pt-br? Thx, Jen
Hi Flod- This is a slightly convoluted bug, but the summary for you is: we'll have one more homepage promo tile to localize ready for you and your team next week. Thx, Jen
I guess we'll need something similar to this for new_home_v2 https://github.com/mozilla/bedrock/pull/1380/
(In reply to Jennifer Bertsch [:jbertsch] from comment #35) > Hey Lizz- > > Do we have "Live what you love" localized into es and pt-br? > > Thx, > Jen Yes. Headlines EN: Live What You Love ES: Vive lo que te hace sentir vivo (LITERAL: Live What Makes You Feel Alive) PT-BR: Viva o que te faz sentir vivo (LITERAL: Live What Makes You Feel Alive)
Hi Lee- How would you feel about 3 versions of the graphic? One in English, one in Spanish, and one in Portuguese? :) Thx.
That won't be a problem, Jen! (In reply to Jennifer Bertsch [:jbertsch] from comment #39) > Hi Lee- > > How would you feel about 3 versions of the graphic? One in English, one in > Spanish, and one in Portuguese? > > :) > > Thx.
Thanks Lee! That sounds like a great solution to me - appreciate it.
With the update to the CTA, I think we need a tweak to the copy here. Still waiting on confirmation from Lizz, but I thought I'd go ahead and write up the new version in the meantime: [COLLAPSED STATE] Stream the surf » [EXPANDED STATE] Stream the surf Firefox connects you to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and all the things you love. Don't miss a second of the action from Hawaii, Nov. 12–Dec. 20. Learn more »
Kristin and I both approve the copy in Comment 42. Thanks Matej!
I approve too. Thanks Matej. Lizz - what is the url for the blog post we'll be pointing to?
(In reply to Jennifer Bertsch [:jbertsch] from comment #44) > I approve too. Thanks Matej. > > Lizz - what is the url for the blog post we'll be pointing to? Shannon, can you please provide the blog post URL when you have it? Thanks!

A preview is available at https://www-demo3.allizom.org/en-US/?v=1 (and https://www-demo3.allizom.org/en-US/?v=2) You can see the Spanish and Portuguese variations at https://www-demo3.allizom.org/es-ES/?v=2 and https://www-demo3.allizom.org/pt-BR/?v=2 respectively, though the text is in English (only the background changes). In production, those locales won't get the new panel until it's been translated.
