Steps to reproduce:
Hi everyone,
I've just updated Mozilla Thunderbird to 24.1.1 & installed it. All through online, automatic updating on Windows XP Professional SP3 32 bits.
Actual results:
After downloading the new version and installing it, I restarted Thunderbird but nothing has happened. :(
I open the Windows's Task Manager and can see the thunderbird.exe process using 118,396 KB. However, I can't see the Tb's window anywhere.
Expected results:
Well, normal thing is that Thunderbird should be running again, after a normal restart.

also in safe mode?

First of all, I wanna note one thing: this has happened only once. I was running Mozilla Thunderbird normally and it automatically downloaded & installed the update. Then it asked me to restart in order to complete the installation of new version, i.e, the last part of update process. I restarted it and I got no Thunderbird window nor any other graphical/visual element — Just the "thunderbird.exe" process running in the Task Manager window. I waited for around 10 minutes and nothing else happened. So I had to kill that process and then run Thunderbird manually. After run it manually it worked just fine, and it was updated.
So it's hard to me to say anything about this happening under Safe Mode too since I was running it in normal mode.
Let's say there's a new Thunderbird release now. If I run Tb in Safe Mode, will it download & update anyway? If you can confirm it will, then I'll run Thunderbird in Safe Mode only from now on, and will wait for a new Tb version to automatically download & update, and finally I'll be able to tell you if this happens in Safe Mode as well.
