Right now the index is deleted before rebuilding occurs, so if ANY problem occurs during the rebuild of the index, that means search will break.
We've already had at least one mysterious breakage of search on production that is a likely result of this, where indexing failed for <some reason> and the pre-deletion of the index resulted in no index left at all.
Indexing needs to be more robust than that.

Closing out, since moziilians was decom'ed. I'm presuming that there's no equivalent failure consistently happening in peoplemo.
