943245 - I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 and firefox version is 25.0.1. While searching from url bar with one word, it does not work.

Steps to reproduce:

I wrote rubymine in the url bar. It's supposed to search google , but it doesn't work.
reproduction path:
1. Open Firefox in Ubuntu 13.10
2. write rubymine in the URL text field.



Actual results:

Nothing happens at all.


Expected results:

it should search rubymine.

Works for me with firefox-25.0.1.en-US.linux64 from Mozilla.

Please try with a new profile https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles  If that helps, try safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode.

If neither helps, it's probably specific to the Ubuntu build; try the Ubuntu bug tracker.  Optionally try a build from https://www.mozilla.org/; note that by default, if no profile is specified, Firefox opens a new window of the Firefox which is running.

This is caused by a dns service that doesn't return NXDOMAIN. Where there is no space in the entry to the url bar firefox does a dns request, and if your dns service hijacks to sell you ads, then it won't search google. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNS_hijacking
