fastboot format was added in jellybean, so if you made a copy somewhere else, you would have to update it. It sounds like the flash script is using an old copy.

Clearing review. I think you're just using an old fastboot. Use "which fastboot" to figure out which fastboot you're using. Using format instead of erase is necessary in order for the cache partition to work. If the cache partition fails to mount, the userdata partition will also fail to mount.
