At the moment it is only possible to show the chat tab by clicking on the Chat button in the Mail Toolbar. This is not very userfriendly for keyboard users and the chat button uses space in the toolbar.
It would be great if there was a menuitem somewhere to display the Chat tab, possibly under View -> Layout. And please add a hotkey too, so you don't have to access it from the menu, but you can also display it with a single key combination like Ctrl+Shift+C.
And if you make it a menuitem, it would be great if the setting was remembered across sessions, so if you restart Thunderbird the menuitem is still selected and the tab is shown immediately. And if you deselect the menuitem, the tab is closed too (after confirmation probably)...

Does Go -> Chat not do what you want?

Note: the chat button in the toolbar is also used to notify you of unread chat messages. If you hide it, you'll be likely to miss some messages.

Like Jum said, there's the Go -> Chat menu.

We used to have Ctrl+Shift+C until someone removed it in bug 786606.

Someone is working on a patch to keep the chat tab open after Thunderbird restarts in bug 789450.

Hmz, I must have overlooked Go -> Chat... Thanks.
And if someone is working on a patch to keep the window open, this bug is probably resolved invalid of worksforme.
