This bug was opened in 2006. I started seeing this problem in Thunderbird version 24.4. I've seen this same problem reported in several bugs. I first added it to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=413240#c52 but it seems they fail to see it as a related problem because my problem involves both IMAP and POP accounts. So I will try here and hope someone fixes this. I am starting to look around for a replacement mail program because this just makes using Thunderbird an exasperating chore to use. I will also look for other bug reports that seem similar and report it there. Someone needs to combine all these so the overall problem is seen and handled.

I continue to have this problem since version 24.4. I am currently using version 31.0 on iMac OS X 10.9.4. This happens to all my POP accounts and my one IMAP account. There are several problems that occur if mail is received by any of my POP or the IMAP accounts while Thunderbird is open:

Trigger: mail is received by any account while Thunderbird is open.

1- Movement out of the Inbox for all accounts stops for all messages that match filters.

2- Junk mail stops being moved automatically to the Junk folders -- they're marked as junk but stay in the Inbox.

3- After composing a message, sending the message fails and a constant status window is displayed saying 'Copying to sent folder'. It never completes. No other actions are possible at this point except to quit. I have to copy the message I was composing to the clipboard and quit the program. To quit, I have to click Cancel and affirm that I want to quit sending the mail. Then I have to Quit the program again to actually turn off Thunderbird so I can start it again.

4- This also happens if I try to do a Save to Draft. It halts displaying a similar message 'Copying to draft folder'. The message composing window goes light gray and click activity is disabled. No copy is saved to any draft folder. IF I copy the message I am composing to the clipboard before trying to save the draft, I can recover by restarting Thunderbird and pasting the message into a new compose window. However, I cannot recover the composed message if I did not do a pre-copy to the clipboard before trying to save the draft because no copy is saved to any draft folder of any account (the one I'm sending from or Local).

My workaround is to always restart Thunderbird before composing an email.
Next step is to go through each of my accounts and Run Filters on all accounts and Run Move Junk Mail to Trash on all accounts.
Empty Trash, Compact account for each account.

However, if mail is received during trying to run filters, or move Junk, or empty Trash, or during composition of a message, the problem happens again. Recovery then involves restarting Thunderbird (or if I am writing a message, copying the email message I am composing to the clipboard, restarting Thunderbird, reconstructing the email from a paste, and re-sending). It can sometimes take several times of copying, restarting Thunderbird, and pasting to be able to send a message.

If a message is successfully sent, I can continue processing and composing mail until a new message is received by any POP or IMAP account. Then Thunderbird locks up and I have to copy what I'm working on and restart Thunderbird.

This is a constantly occurring problem--reproducible several times a day.
Although all symptoms of this problem are still present in TB31.6, building and running TB Daily, currently targeted to TB40, fixes for me most if not all the issues (i.e. hangs when saving to Sent and Draft folders, and failure to move filtered and junk messages from Inboxes). What a blessed relief to again have a mail program that I can leave open, rather than one that I can only run briefly when I want to check or send mail, composing in a separate editor.

(We don't know of vario still sees this issue, but we have several similar bug reports so with no testcase here there's no harm in closing this)
