i have noticed that even after reading messages in a given folder --be it a
folder that receives filtered email, or even my Inbox-- the new message count
doesn't update properly. in my case, after i've read all the unread messages
--and even deleted [and emptied the trash] messages i don't want to keep-- the
new message count doesn't always go to zero [or, rather, a bold number is still
displayed].

strangely, this doesn't happen with *all* my folders. for example, on my linux
box at the office, it's only my bugmail folder [which receives filtered mail]
that doesn't display properly. but on my linux box at home, it's my inbox that
doesn't display properly. again, this might be due to some mail configuration
differences [perhaps minor ones in my filters?].

i can attach a screenshot, if you want.

i've noticed this with builds since 2001.08.06.08 --it might be an older problem
than that, though... unfortunately, i don't really have steps that cause this
problem to occur, it's more of an observation --if anyone has actual steps to
get this to crop, do add it here!

let me know if there are any workarounds for this. eg, should i remove the
summary files?
laurel mentioned seeing this --laurel, did this occur on other platforms? and
were there a series of steps to get into this state? thx!
No steps that I know of. Seen on win32. I haven't seen it again after
installing the aug09 build.
I have still seen this behavior on Linux with Aug10 build. Here is a screenshot
showing (2) new msgs in INBOX even though there are none:

yep, i see this with the 2001.08.09.10-comm verif bits. exiting and restarting
mail doesn't clear it up either, fwiw.
I started seeing this in the last couple of days. I've had my imap inbox opened
on two computers at once (Bad me!), becauise I've been moving arround. Could
that be the problem?

I removed the summary file and it was fixed. I didn't keep a copy of it, though.
In goofing with this futher, I found that Highlighting all Messages and then
marking them all as read (Message->Mark->As Read) will clear this up (or just
CTRL+SHIFT+C) as far as the count next to INBOX in the Sidebar.

This however doesn't properly reset the "Total: N" box on the Status bar. The
status bar still shows 2 more messages in my INBOX than are actually there.

You can see in the following screenshot that my INBOX has only 10 messages but
the Status Bar's "Total: " line shows 12:

my belief is that this is a dup of bug 94329, or has the same cause, in any
case. Marking all read will fix the count, and then I don't belief you'll be
able to recreate this bug after that, assuming you're running a build that has
the fix for bug 94329.
duping.
