Description

From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.3) Gecko/20010801
BuildID:    2001080110

Applet not loaded. Exception reported to Java console instead:
java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.lang.RuntimePermission
modifyThreadGroup)  at
java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source)  at
java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source)  at
java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source)  at
sun.applet.AppletSecurity.checkAccess(Unknown Source)  at
java.lang.ThreadGroup.checkAccess(Unknown Source)  at
java.lang.Thread.init(Unknown Source)  at java.lang.Thread.<init>(Unknown
Source)  at Lauftext.start(Lauftext.java:82)  at
sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(Unknown Source)  at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
Error occurs only when applet has a class opening a thread on its own, e. g.:
   public void start () {
        if (timer == null) {
            timer = new Thread (this);
            timer.setPriority (Thread.MIN_PRIORITY);
            timer.start ();
        }
    }
    public void stop () {
        timer = null;
    }
    public void run () {
        while (timer != null) {
        try {
              Thread.currentThread ().sleep (milliSek);
        }
        catch (InterruptedException ie) { }
        if (painted) {
                painted = false;
                repaint ();
         }
      }
    }
All other applets are doing fine. Further details see files in attachment.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Run one of the *.html-files in the attachment which implement plugin 1.3.1

Actual Results: Applet not loaded. Exception reported to Java console instead

Expected Results: Applet loaded and running.

Bug appears on Win98/2, too, with same Mozilla build. You can work around it
by starting new thread only when applet is loaded.
On Linux kernel 2.4.4GBi686 (SuSE 7.2) Mozilla build 2001080104 and Netscape 6/6.0
(Mozilla/5.0 Gecko/20001107) don't have such problems with threads, using
jdk1.3.1 plugin.
