Message pane (in main mail window) ignores user settings when changing from a
server "page" (Local Folders, mail servers, news servers) to a folder or
newsgroup. Symptom: the message pane returns to its original position without
the user's permission.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select a "server," such as Local Folders.
2. Make sure the message pane is minimized: view -> message (unchecked).
3. Select a folder or newsgroup, such as Sent in Local Folders.

Actual Results:  Message pane returns to its original, unminimized position;
view -> message is again checked.

Expected Results: Message pane should remain minimized.

After a long hiatus, I am now on build 2002-05-30-12, and I am still
experiencing the same problem as described. Is there any more information I
should give that I haven't?

Summary: message pane pops up after being disabled when changing from server to folder → message pane pops up after being disabled when changing from 'server' to 'folder/newsgroup'
Here is some more info on reproducing this bug which might be useful. I already
posted this info into bug 150354, but that bug will probably end up being
resolved as duplicate of this bug.

In the Mozilla preferences, under "Mail & Newsgroups", there are two options for
window layout. (The "left" option with the folder tree all the way down the
left side, and the "right" option with the folder tree only as far down as the
message pane) These message pane problems only occur when the "right" layout
option is selected. If I select the "left" option for window layout, my message
pane will stay minimzed.

In lieu of comment #4, I was indeed using the right-hand mail-window layout
preference when I experienced the bug. Using the left-hand layout preference
has provided a *workaround* for this bug, but I feel this bug should still be
addressed.

From bug 154621

1. View -> Show/Hide -> Message Pane (turns off the message pane).
2. Close MailNews.
3. Reopen MailNews.

Actual Results: The message pane is back, and this time I have to perform step
1 TWICE to get it to disappear again.

Seth, you might recognise this patch, it's part of the patch to bug 105542.
I'm having the exact same problem with Windows 2000 - Mozilla 1.0.
