In the latest nightly, buddy text displays in bold weight, overriding Message Styles.  User text correctly displays in normal weight.  All displays correctly in the Message Style dialog.

I tried with the latest nightly and didn't encounter this problem.

So some questions for a more detailled report:
Does it happen on any conversation or just on certain (which might be the 'problem' that your buddy is actually sending bold text)?
Any regularities when it happens (same protocol type, same buddy, same channel on IRC,.. )?
What message theme are you using?

It was happening with the nightly from the 9th with the default message style as well as several Adium styles.  It is not appearing today with the most current nightly for the 11th. :)

Was it with a specific contact only?
If the bold is sent by your contact and you don't want to see it, you can adjust from about:config the value of the pref messenger.options.filterMode and set it to 0 to remove all formattings from incoming messages.

I am pretty sure it was not being sent by the contact.  I was getting IM's from AIM , MSN, and Yahoo all doing it with different contacts.  I logged out and went into the real AIM, Yahoo and MSN programs separately and the text appeared in normal formatting.

I think I've figured out what was happening.  It was only with certain buddys.  I think when a buddy is using a large font it's showing up as bold.  Does that sound right?  I have several buddys who wear glasses so they always set their fonts to large in the IM window and those are the ones that are showing up in bold.

Yes, that sounds right. In this case, if you are annoyed by these formatting changes, you can disable them from the preference window in the "Content" tab, using the first drop down ("Display formattings of incoming messages:").

Resolving as INVALID as this doesn't seem to be actually a bug in Instantbird.
