The conversation used as a sample in the Message themes tab of the Themes prefpane is very likely to contain emoticons.
To look as a real preview of a conversation, it should use the emoticons of the theme that the user has currently selected. This means that when the user changes the emoticon theme, the message theme preview should be refreshed, and should use the emoticon theme selected in the "Emoticons" tab, even when this choice has not been saved yet (on Windows the preference changes don't apply instantly).

On the behalf of Florian:
Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
