*** Original post on bio 359 at 2010-03-09 08:58:00 UTC *** Currently, when the preference to popup notification for messages arriving in inactive windows is enabled, notifications are displayed only if none of the conversation windows is active when the message is received. For users using multiple conversation windows, with some of them covering the others, it means that messages arriving in windows hidden in the background are may go unnoticed. However, showing notifications for all messages arriving in a conversation window which is not focused is not a good solution, because for users who have several small conversation windows visible at the same time on the screen instead of using tabs, there would be notification popups for almost all conversations (all but the selected conversation), which is undesirable. This bug seems hard to correctly fix unless we find a way to know if a conversation is currently visible on the screen.
On the behalf of Florian: Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
