it depends on where the sdk is put, I can build it here on fedora 14 fine without that patch

Instantbird 0.2 is designed to work with Mozilla 1.9.2 (and may work with 1.9.1 with some minor adjustments). It won't work at all with Mozilla 2.0.

Our current trunk (which will lead to 0.3 builds) works with Mozilla 2.0, and this part of our patch to adapt the build system for Mozilla 2.0 is very similar to your attachment:
