The buddy info available from the tooltip could be used in a much more beneficial way by allowing it to be interactive. This would include being able to copy the information out of it and making some links interactive (i.e. email addresses).

I'm not sure this is possible since the current system is based on tooltips.

Some people tend to include links in their status messages so at some point we will really need to change the way tooltips are closed so that it's possible to hover them and click inside them.

Maybe the idea with two different displays of buddies on the list could help. Skype, for exmaple, shows the selected contact in a larger view, where links contained in the statusmessage are clickable.

Bug 953671 (bio 225) is about including additional information in the buddy listby the way. There is also WIP code attached there and a few links to screenshots of other applications + an Instantbird screenshot with a quick status-message hack.

What about having a normal tooltip with reduced / minimal information for each contact and a profile-view/contact-details-dialog that contains everything we know about a contact and its buddies. The information displayed there should be copyable or clickable then of course.

Different protocols have different profile information fields.
Thus, this would have to be somewhat dynamic or have protocol-specific definitions/windows.

One great place to open the check- and copy-able information is in a conversation window, where the user avatar and name is listed. As it currently does not have any function (clicking) other than displaying just that, it's a good and intuitive place.
It should also be callable in the contact list, via right-click.
For Meta-contacts it could open the primary accounts information or make it a submenu in the rightclick menu for each account.

I'm not sure an interactive tooltip is a good idea, even if it could be done. I suspect this effectively bug 954393 (bio 959) (Provide a buddy "Get info" command) as per comment #3, as such a display should be editable.
