Something like every two or three days I have a partial update that fails on current nightlies.

I let this bug unconfirmed and marked as a Win7 issue until some others do confirm this, if possible on other OSes.

I have Win7, too. And today, after normal update from yesterday's version to today's, there was one more update (partial) just after Instantbird has restarted. But it hasn't failed.
Thats strange-two updates just behind. Both of them had 12MB.

12MB is not a partial update (they typically weights 1MB).

When a partial update fails, the updater automatically falls back to downloading a complete update. You are describing a partial update failure followed by a successful complete update.

As a matter of fact, he isn't. If both of them eighted 12MB, then it was 2 complete updates. Very strange. I do believe it's a mistake and really is a partial (1MB) failing and then a complete (12MB) succuuding, just as it happened to me.

A double partial update can occur if an update was downloaded from the previous day but not yet appied. Then it might apply, start, download the last partial, and ask for a restart again. So, if you notice a double partial, just don't report. Very high chances for it to be normal.

I think this is only if the second partial update happens after a manual "check for updates". I don't think we can automatically check for update just after applying another update. Oh well, I don't know...

I can confirm this problem on WinXP.
Also downloading of the update is slow (fluctuating from 2 to 40kB/s).

In present (from middle of December) I don't have this problem. I am updating the alpha version every day and no update failed since that time.

It's possible the fix from https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=635161 will make this issue mostly disappear.

Also observed on Linux.

I don't know what we should do about this bug. We know it does exists, but it still feels like we can't reproduce it in a reproductible way. Plus, the update log don't help at all.

Should we resolve it as INCOMPLETE or set to NEW hoping someone can bring more info to improve this?

I haven't had a partial update failure since the update from XUL 7 to XUL 9 (see bug #954593 (bio 1161)). Maybe it solved this issue. If other people have more insight about this (like already had another similar issue since updating), it would be cool to let us know about this. Otherwise, we weill close this one because right now, there is no serious way to pinpoint the problem and even less hope of solving it by ourselves (meaning we will have to wait for someone on the Mozilla's side to find out & correct the issue).

Hasn't happened to me for at least 2 months now either.

Seems it's been confirmed even recently ;)

I haven't seen this problem in a long time. Does anyone else still have it?

Yes, I had a partial updates fail not 2 days ago at work on win7.
On the behalf of Florian:
Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
